General Summary: 

The Associate Dean of Students/Deputy Title IX Coordinator will serve as a senior member of the leadership team within the Division of Student Affairs; and will serve on the Vice Chancellor’s Cabinet.  Under the general direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs/Dean of Students, the incumbent will provide strategic direction for the division’s operations; set goals; direct staff; establish policy initiatives that affect the campus community, including all undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff members. 

The Associate Dean of Students will provide strategic and active support for conduct and Title IX processes, programs and services for undergraduate and graduate students, with major areas of responsibility including supervision, development, evaluation and implementation of the community standards and the Student Code of Conduct & Title IX initiatives, including supervision of a Title IX investigator and a Conduct case manager, and supervise the Off-Campus Housing office.  In addition, the Associate Dean of Students will collaborate with other student-facing departments, including but not limited to Admissions, Athletics, Student Activities, Residence Life & Housing, the Ross Center for Disability Services, Career Services, Office of Global Programs, the Office of Diversity, Equality and Inclusion and Student Financial Aid Services. 

Examples of Duties: 

  • Serve as a senior member of the leadership team within the Division of Student Affairs and assist the Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs/Dean of Students in implementing the vision and goals of the Dean of Students area; work in close collaboration with senior Student Affairs and campus officials, such as Provost, Deans of colleges and Chief of Public Safety with regard to policy development and student issues of discipline, Title IX investigations and academic/developmental care cases; lead and provide critical strategic planning, decision-making, and execution of decisions for the Dean of Students area;
  • Advise the Associate Vice Chancellor/Dean of Students, and coordinate with other senior campus officials, on matters including student code of conduct, Title IX initiatives, programs across the division of Student Affairs, budget, personnel, assessment, and community relations; ensure that high-priority projects and initiatives are effectively and efficiently managed; manage and triage confidential and sensitive issues for the Associate Vice Chancellor/Dean of Students and develop solutions to a wide range of issues in all areas of campus operations;
  • Oversee the implementation of student-related Title IX initiatives in regards to education, administration and adjudication; serve as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Student Affairs and work closely with the Office of Diversity, Equality and Inclusion to ensure that campus initiatives are consistent and adhere to best practices and legal compliance; supervise the work performed by the Investigator for Student Concerns;
  • Identify and respond to students in distress or crisis, create intervention protocols and advise faculty/staff and parents/families; respond to student concerns, making inquiries or referrals to appropriate University programs and departments and/or external agencies as needed to meet students’ needs; chair the behavior/threat assessment team, including coordinating regular meetings to assess needs of and appropriate course of action for students referred for services.
  • Lead, administer and supervise departments and programs assigned to the Associate Dean, including student conduct, Title IX, Off-Campus Housing, and student employees who work in the Office of the Dean of Students and initiate and coordinate short and long-term goals, objectives, planning processes, and assessment efforts for such areas; provide support and direction on all conduct matters to all parties on campus including Residence Life and Public Safety staff;
  • Oversee and monitor the personnel, fiscal management, and related administrative support for Student Conduct,  and student Title IX,; responsible for the strategic and active delivery of student services; lead the development of student life policies and procedures and services delivery systems that are comprehensive, integrated, and consistent; develop partnerships with University agencies to enhance and coordinate delivery of services to all University Students and develop and implement systems to respond to student-related problems and concerns;
  • Provide oversight and supervision of the day-to-day implementation of the Student Conduct system, including  maintaining of accurate and confidential records; coordinate the development, coordination and dissemination of all policies and procedures; prepare Dean Certification requests for students as needed for transfer applications or other relevant programs; collect and evaluate data regarding reasons for transfers; develop and provide education and training for conduct boards; implement outreach and educational programs to educate students, faculty  and staff about community standards and the Code of Conduct; develop and implement the strategic plan, priorities, and outcomes assessment measures;
  • Oversee the expansion of off-campus efforts including better collaboration with off-campus partners, increased outreach and education for students,  establishment of programs to help transition students who lived in the residence halls to “off campus” living.
  • Work in conjunction with University Health Services to develop and implement comprehensive alcohol and drug prevention program, establishing outreach programs that are campus and community based;
  • Represent the Division on University-wide committees and task forces, as needed;
  • Provide coverage for the Investigator for Employee Concerns regarding staff and employee investigations, as needed;
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications: 

Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs Administration, Student Development/Counseling or a closely related field and a minimum of seven-ten (7-10) years of progressively responsible experience in Student Affairs Administration is required. Strong background in student development is required.  Substantial experience in managing and supervising student judicial process is required.  Experience with emergency/crisis management is required.  Broad-based experience working successfully and closely with a diverse population of students, preferably in an urban setting, is required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate preferred.

  • Demonstrated success in cultivating relationships and creating collaborative partnerships;
  • Demonstrated success and experience with fiscal and budgetary management;
  • Ability to lead and supervise staff;
  • Ability to work with confidential information pertaining to students;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills;
  • Strong conflict-resolution, crisis management, and facilitation skills;
  • Strong commitment to customer and student service.
