The half-time Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) Project Coordinator will be responsible for day-to-day oversight of a year-long internship program for students from underrepresented groups who are interested in earning PhD degrees in biomedical/biobehavioral disciplines. S/he will be responsible for developing and implementing a summer program that includes social and professional development activities. They will also manage a year-long internship program for the same group of students and serve as a role model and mentor for them.
- Use knowledge of obstacles of diversity to help students overcome feelings of isolation and imposter syndrome identified through regular one-on-one meetings.
- Design and conduct orientation session for incoming students.
- Help students identify strengths and weakness to prepare individualized development plans (IDPs) in consultation with their laboratory PIs and the grant PIs
- Meet with each student and the grant PIs to discuss their summer experience and determine whether possible changes in laboratories, as well as the participant’s strengths and weaknesses.
- Verify that all students are attending mandatory elements of the PREP program
- Assist participants in developing abstracts of his/her work
- Monitor progress of the students
- Solicit a mid-summer evaluation of each PREP participant from the laboratory PI and laboratory near-peer mentor
- Assist PREP participants in writing applications for travel awards to attend ABRCMS and SACNAS meetings.
- Cultivate relationships with faculty at minority-serving institutions and develop a contact list of institutions from which the PREP students come for future recruiting activities.
- Ensure that participants are following IDPs and progressing well during the academic year
- Lead discussions that reinforce professional development activities.
- Meet regularly with grant PIs to discuss progress and problems of students.
- Oversee data collection and assist with writing of annual reports to NIH
- Keep in touch with PREP participants after they have completed the program and are in graduate school at UMass or other institutions.
- Maintain an alumni list that is regularly updated as students progress through graduate school and beyond.
- Serve on the Leadership Team.
- Process all forms/contracts required of the university for fellowships, Non-Degree Status and student loan deferment Review applicant files
- Contact each person chosen to participate in the program and send them information including travel, housing, health and financial forms.
- Match participants with near-peer mentors
- Organize regular social and professional development programs, including GRE preparation sessions.
- Organize picnic and poster session for participants, their near-peers and faculty mentors
- Convene virtual meetings of participants with previous cohorts.
- Work with Chemistry Biology Interface (CBI) and Biotech Training Program (BTP) program coordinators to ensure PREP participation in enrichment activities of these programs.
- Supervise graduate resident assistant
- Update the PREP website.
- Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
- Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
- Masters degree in biomedical sciences, behavioral sciences or science education.
- Experience working with underrepresented students and a deep knowledge of available research data on obstacles to diversity that are specific to STEM disciplines.
- Must be willing to travel and work some evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
- PhD degree in biomedical sciences, behavioral sciences or science education
- Experience with outreach to minority populations or organizing and running diversity programs at multiple levels.

50% FTE part time grant funded position
