SUPERVISION: Provides direct supervision to the Associate Director of the Frederick Douglas Unity House, administrative assistant and student employees.
SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: Plans, implements and administers programs and services that promote the quality of campus life for students, with a particular emphasis on attracting, including, and supporting traditionally underrepresented populations.
As Assistant Dean of Students, advises and counsels students and family members on personal and academic matters, provides resources for problem-solving. Serves on after-hours Dean on-Call rotation and provides necessary support and follow up related to student emergencies. Advises student groups and assists them in addressing concerns and resolving problems. Serves as a Senior University Conduct Officer.
As Director of the Frederick Douglass Unity House (FDUH), oversees and participates in the development of co-curricular programs and services for students of color and multicultural education programs for all members of the University community. Creates and implements University-wide initiatives and programs focused on enhancing and creating opportunities for intergroup dialogue and cross-cultural community building, with an emphasis on intersectionality. Directs strategic planning and oversees the day-to-day operations of the FDUH in the areas of budget planning, policy and procedures development, and programmatic initiatives. Oversees the continuous development of services, programs and activities provided to target populations in accordance with the FDUH Mission and Vision Statements. Provides consultation to faculty, administration, staff, and students on issues of diversity, inclusion and multiculturalism.
Follows the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention, and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.
EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assistant Dean of Student Duties:
- Plan, implement and administer programs and services that promote a quality campus life for students.
- Serve as student conduct hearing officer for violations of the Code of Conduct, rendering sanctions including dismissal from the University.
- Respond to individual and community crises by serving as a "Dean on Call" on a rotating basis; provide follow-up for all crisis situations handled while on call.
- Advise and counsel students and family members on personal academic matters;
- Consult with faculty on issues that interfere with students’ academic and personal success;
- Serve as member of Behavior Intervention Team to assess threat level of students exhibiting erratic, disruptive, or dangerous behavior;
- Chair and serve on several University committees and task forces as appropriate.
Director of FDUH Duties:
- Provide leadership for the FDUH's mission, programs, and services and promote them throughout the University community.
- Supervise the Associate Director of the FDUH, an Administrative Assistant, and student employees.
- Collaborate with the FDUH Faculty/Staff Steering Committee to develop, implement and evaluate the FDUH programs and services in alignment with the University's strategic plan and mission.
- Serve as a campus resource for issues related to the retention and completion of students of color, racial/ethnic identity formation, and multicultural education;
- Coordinate programming that encourages critical thinking, challenges stereotypes, and develops the skills necessary to create positive change;
- Develop and implement university-wide programs that celebrate the contributions of the UMass Dartmouth community of color events.
- Collaborate with faculty to present art exhibits, speakers/film series, and performances that highlight the history and accomplishments of people of color;
- Manage and oversee all aspects of the FDUH operating budget. Review and sign all contracts for services and purchases in conjunction with the Business Office.
- Advocate for the needs and concerns of students of color to ensure their success.
- Develop and oversee leadership training program to prepare students from underrepresented groups for major campus leadership roles on campus and in the larger community.
- Represent the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on community-based projects and committees serving under-represented populations.
- Collaborate with Student Activities, Involvement, and Leadership, Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality, Career Center, Athletics, and other departments on student programming and services.
EDUCATION: Master’s Degree in counseling, student affairs, multicultural education, social justice, or related field.
EXPERIENCE: Significant experience (over seven years) in college student development with demonstrated increased levels of responsibility. Significant experience counseling and advising students and responding to crisis situations and students in crisis. Significant experience developing and implementing innovative programs, services, and activities for students of color.
OTHER: Evening and weekend hours as required. Some local and regional travel required including travel to national conferences.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

- Experience with community organizing and familiarity with grass roots organizing strategies.
- Experience with grant writing and fundraising.
