Job Summary

Under the direction of the School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) Assistant Director for Career Planning, plans and organizes career development activities for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as alumni within the School of Public Health and Health Sciences in cooperation with dean(s), department heads and faculty. These activities may include: individual career counseling, career education, alumni mentoring and job shadowing events, coordination and implementation of career fairs, data collection and assessment, and social media/marketing outreach activities for the SPHHS Office of Career Planning.

 

Essential Functions

  • In conjunction with Director, designs and implements strategies that maximize student participation in career development activities prior to graduation. Enlists faculty support and involvement; advises deans and department heads regarding employment and occupational trends and their implications for university graduates.
  • Participates in strategizing and establishing departmental goals and objectives based upon needs of students, alumni, employers and SPHHS in conjunction with the University’s strategic plan.
  • Conducts after-hours workshops and classroom presentations on a variety of career related topics (resume and cover letter writing, internship and job searching, interviewing skills, etc.).
  • Counsels and advises individual students and alumni; evaluates level of career preparedness using various strategies; advises clients about career options related to their interests and qualifications and the availability of employment opportunities; identifies factors inhibiting career decision-making and makes appropriate referrals.
  • Provides outreach and engages with employers and organizations to help manage recruiting relationships that would be most attractive for SPHHS majors with the goal of improving the number and range of internship and employment opportunities.
  • Assists the Director in the coordination and implementation of career fairs, alumni networking events, and career panel discussions. Involves employers in campus activities designed to enrich students’ understanding of occupations, careers and employer trends; coordinates with Mt. Ida Internship Coordinator to effectively manage external relationships.
  • Collects student, employer, and alumni data via surveys and other assessment methods to compile quantitative data reports and summaries. Tracks, assesses, reviews, and evaluates workshops and program effectiveness.
  • Approves employers and jobs in Handshake database or similar career management system prior to releasing internship/job information to students.
  • Acts as a liaison between SPHHS Office of Career Planning and variety of student led organizations, departments, and offices.
  • Provides content and resources for website, responsible for monitoring links and keeping website current and up-to-date by working in conjunction with the SPHHS marketing and outreach team.
  • Coordinates with SPHHS marketing and outreach team as well as Central Career Services, campus-wide departments, and peer-led programs to gather and disseminate career content for Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms with the aim of advertising and promoting all career events and activities.
  • Creates the content for CareerSnap, weekly career newsletter as well as designs flyers and additional promotional materials in collaboration with the SPHHS marketing and outreach team.

 

Other Functions

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Represents the career office at staff, departmental and school wide or campus meetings in the absence of the Director.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, or other relevant field of study plus a minimum of three years’ work experience with high school or college age students in a mentoring, advising, counseling, supervising or related role.
  • Current knowledge of the job market, occupational outcomes of a variety of health disciplines and familiarity with recognized career guidance and job search tools.
  • Ability to use computers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Passion for helping students and willingness to learn.

 

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Psychology or related field and two plus years of experience, with high school or college age students in a mentoring, advising, counseling, supervising or related role.

 

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Typical office environment.

 

Work Schedule

M-F, 37.5 hours per week, nights and weekends as needed.
