Job Description:

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant professor rank in the broad area of Biomedical Engineering; applicants in the areas of immunoengineering, neuroengineering, bioinstrumentation, and medical devices are particularly encouraged. While we are seeking talented applicants qualified for an assistant professor position; under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks may receive consideration. The appointment is expected to begin September 1, 2020.

Requirements:

The candidates are expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses; supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows; contribute significantly to the advancement of basic science and engineering, as evidenced by scholarly publications; develop a nationally recognized program of sponsored research; and have a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Candidates must have an earned a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or related field by August 31, 2020.  Post-doctoral research experience is desired, but not mandatory, for the rank of assistant professor. For associate or full professors, the successful candidate will possess academic credentials of the highest quality and have a strong record of teaching, research, extramural funding, service, and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  Applicants with research and teaching expertise in areas of biomaterials for devices and regenerative medicine or biosensors and bioinstrumentation are especially encouraged.  

 

Additional Information:

The Department of Biomedical Engineering was established in 2017. Thus, successful candidates will have the opportunity to help shape the growth of the new Department of Biomedical Engineering. The department will represent the core of biomedical engineering research and teaching at UMass, Amherst and will leverage synergies with other departments in the College as well as with the new Institute of Applied Life Sciences (IALS: https://www.umass.edu/ials/), which was established in 2014 with an investment of more than $150 million from the Massachusetts Life Science Center and the University. IALS manages more than 30 core equipment facilities to enable its translational mission (https://www.umass.edu/ials/core-facilities). There are also avenues for collaboration with the UMass Medical School located in Worcester, MA and Baystate Health in Springfield, MA.

  • a cover letter, addressed to Dr. Seth Donahue, clearly indicating how their research and teaching interests will help shape the department,
  • a four-page NIH-style Biosketch indicating current position and title, education and training, personal statement, positions and honors, contributions to science (including peer-reviewed publications), and research support,
  • two-page statement of research interests (including plans for securing extramural funding),
  • one-page statement of teaching interests,
  • a statement on their approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion as it relates to the faculty role,
  • names and contact information for at least three professional references.
