Job Description

The Department of Music and Dance of the University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks to hire an Associate Professor of Music History (with tenure). The position is open to candidates with research and teaching expertise in any area of historical musicology, although preference will be accorded to candidates whose expertise can complement that of current faculty. This is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position at the Associate Professor rank to begin September 1, 2026.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain robust research activity of national and international stature.

  • Teach a 2/2 load (a combination of general education classes, courses for undergraduate majors and minors, and graduate seminars).

  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate research.

  • Serve on committees at the department, college, and university level.

  • Serve on committees and boards of professional societies/organizations. Requirements

  • Candidates for the position are expected to hold a Ph.D. in Music History/Musicology/Historical Musicology and have been awarded tenure at a comparable University.

  • Have outstanding research and teaching records, appropriate for a senior-level appointment at the University.

  • Record of service at the departmental/university level and in professional societies/organizations. 

  • Experience teaching large general education classes and supervising graduate research is preferred.

 

Salary Information

The University of Massachusetts Amherst expects to pay within an approximate range between $90,160 and $125,563 for this position. Please note:

  • The low-end of the pay range in all faculty searches at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the minimum salary for the rank included in the collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Massachusetts Society of Professors, UMass Amherst/MTA/NEA.

  • The high-end of the pay range reflects an increase above the median of salaries at this rank within the department for faculty who may have multiple years of faculty experience.

  • The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors, including faculty rank and required or relevant certifications, when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.

 

Additional Information

The selected candidate will undergo an expedited tenure process upon hiring.

This position is a 9-month academic year appointment at 100%FTE with full benefits.
