General Summary of Position:

The successful applicant will cultivate existing and lead new analytical and experimental research tied to biomedical engineering (e.g., human mobility, gait, balance, biomechanics, prosthetics and/or assistive robotics, as well as other areas tied to human motor control).  A related focus will be placed on developing virtual and augmented reality systems tied home and clinical-based applications. 

The initial appointment will be for approximately one year with a possibility of renewal based on interest, productivity, performance and the availability of funding.

Essential Job Duties:

Conduct analytical and experimental research with the Principal Investigator (PI). 

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing scientific research projects with the ability to lead some projects as the principal investigator (PI) and facilitate others as a co-PI.
  • Researching and staying abreast of scientific literature to define new research projects and their objectives
  • Identifying and implementing creative solutions to overcome problems.
  • Analyzing, organizing, and interpreting data.
  • Managing and training research staff (e.g., students and postdocs) to achieve research goals.
  • Collaborating with internal and external researchers on projects overseen by the lab PI
  • Compiling results of research studies in the form of scientific abstracts and manuscripts.
  • Attending national conferences and presenting results of clinical studies.
  • Contributing to teaching and outreach
  • Grant preparation and submission

Assist supervisor in writing scholarly articles and proposals for grant funding:

The successful candidate will be expected to initiate and assist in the formulation and writing of externally funded research proposals.  This effort will include finding appropriate opportunities, finding collaborative partners, generating preliminary data, and proposal writing. 

The successful candidate will be expected to publish at least three articles per year in peer-reviewed scientific journals based on the research conducted.  Papers and presentations in scientific conferences will also be required. Development of patentable technologies over the course of the project will also be expected.

Attend Meetings related to the research projects:

  • Conduct weekly group meeting between PI, postdocs, and students
  • Actively participate and present in the cross-institutional research meetings.
  • Present research at conferences

Supervision of Undergraduate and Graduate Students:

  • Meet regularly throughout the week with each student to review their research project, progress, papers and to develop path forward. 

For Postdoctoral Research Associate:

Education: 

  • Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Rehabilitation Engineering or another related field (e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics) by time of appointment

Experience:

  • Minimum five years of experience in research (including MS and PhD. research experience).

For Research Engineer:

  • Candidate should have at minimum the same qualifications above for the Postdoctoral Research Associate title, however will also have had post-PhD experience working full-time as a Postdoctoral Research Associate or similar position for at least 3 years.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of human subject research
  • Motivation and self-direction
  • Exemplary problem-solving, as well as written and oral communication skills
  • Eligibility to work legally in the United States
  • A track record of scholarly research 
  • Ability to work with the research team which includes undergraduate and graduate students
  • Experience with biostatistics and data analysis is desirable.
  • Strong technical report writing and communication skills.
  • Experience with motion capture, forceplate, surface electromyography and electroencephalography equipment.

This is a full-time, benefited, Grants union position. Grade PD for Postdoctoral Research Associate and P16 for Research Engineer.

Anticipated salary based on the ranges indicated below:

Postdoctoral Research Associate minimum: $50,000 25th quartile: $56,500 and midpoint $63,000.

Research Engineer (P16) minimum: $59,674, 25th quartile $67,879 and midpoint $76,085.

This position is contingent upon funding. The initial appointment will be for approximately one year with a possibility of renewal based on interest, productivity, performance and the availability of funding.
