SUPERVISES: Temporary Hires for Video Analysis

 

SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:  Supervise and provide quality assurance for all drop camera image analysis for UMass Dartmouth’s School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) – Marine Fisheries Field Research Group. Participate in at-sea data collection when required. Assist in other aspects of the lab including, but not limited to, ventless trap surveys, groundfish video trawl survey, and outreach events.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise, and oversee the image processing laboratory
    • Management of lab technicians
    • Quality control of image analysis
  • Laboratory image analysis:
    • Use of ImagePro (or similar) software and custom SMAST database and software; SQL Server querying
    • Identification and measurement of benthic organisms
    • Data entry; Quality-control audits
  • Assistance with grant proposal and reporting requirements
    • Assist with preparation of proposals and reports
    • Data analysis for grant requirements
  • Assistance with GIS mapping
    • Aid in creation of publication quality maps
    • Summarize yearly project data in maps for public presentations
  • At-sea data collection
    • 6 to 10 days per trip onboard commercial fishing vessels as part of drop camera or video trawl surveys.
    • Day trips onboard small commercial vessels to conduct planktonic and ventless trap sampling
  • Help manage research group social media accounts, outreach events and outreach video assets
    • Prepare posts for multiple social media platforms on a consistent basis
    • Organize and attend outreach events in the southern New England region

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED):

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree in biology, fisheries, or ecology.

EXPERIENCE: Practical experience with image analysis (>2 years), Identification of marine organisms through video survey technologies (>2 years), database QA/QC (>1 year), previous at-sea experience supporting or conducting marine related scientific research (>2 years).

OTHER:  Must possess a valid driver’s license.  It is essential that the incumbent is able to participate in at sea research cruises, being able to spend as much as 12 days at sea per cruise.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Experience with image and video analysis for scientific research
  • Experience with at-sea data collection
  • Excellent communication skills and excellent organizational ability
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong writing skills

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters of science degree in fisheries, ecology or biology strongly preferred
  • Experience working with and managing the collection of scientific data
  • Experience working with the commercial fishing industry
  • Experience with the operation, and maintenance of underwater cameras, video equipment
  • Knowledge of Federal grant protocols and requirements
  • Ability to supervise, train and assist undergraduate employees in various aspects of field and laboratory work
