REPORTS TO: Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
SUPERVISES: Provide direct supervision for professional staff, as assigned by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Direct reports may include, but are not limited to: Assistant Dean of Students/Director of the Frederick Douglass Unity House, Assistant Dean of Students/Director for the Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality, Director of Student Conduct and Dispute Resolution, Director of New Student and Family Programs, Director of Student Care and Advocacy and Director of Religious and Spiritual Life, and administrative staff. Position also serves as the advisor to the Student Government Association and co-advisor to the Graduate Student Senate.
SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: As a member of the Division's leadership team, the Associate Vice Chancellor advances the University's educational mission by providing leadership for co-curricular programs and activities that enhance the quality of campus life and promote student engagement, development and personalized learning. The Associate Vice Chancellor will be responsible for setting student life policies, budget management of departments, and the supervision and evaluation of professional staff. The Associate Vice Chancellor will also represent the Division of Student Affairs and the campus to parents/families and to various regional community groups. The Associate Vice Chancellor initiates and provides strategic direction on policies, programs, and responses related to a broad range of student life issues. The Associate Vice Chancellor will lead a team of professional staff who plan, implement and administer programs and services that enhance the quality of campus life for students. The Associate Vice Chancellor responds to student and family concerns and crisis situations.
EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinates and implements divisional initiatives such as professional development, assessment, student learning outcome assessment, annual report data collection and report writing, allocation of resources and formulation of policies and procedures.
- Provides leadership to the implementation of and later revisions to the Division’s strategic plan.
- Assists with planning and implementing programs that promote the quality of campus life and personalized learning.
- Prepares and oversees budgets for all reporting areas.
- Participates in grievance/arbitration activities on behalf of the Vice Chancellor. Represents the interests of the Division of Student Affairs in collective bargaining negotiations.
- Serves as an advocate for students and assists in efforts to ensure student voice is included in University decisions that directly affect students’ education and well-being.
- Advises and counsels students on personal development, interpersonal relationships, behavior concerns, and other issues that impede academic success.
- Convenes regular meetings of direct report staff to ensure collaboration and identify opportunities for synergy and support.
- Directs and manages after-hours On-Call efforts of the University to respond to evening and weekend needs and emergencies. Serves as Dean On-Call as needed to support needs of on-call staff.
- Directs and manages the Care Network, a cross-campus, problem-solving approach that identifies and assists "at-risk" students.
- Provides leadership to the Behavioral Intervention Team that addresses students' erratic, alarming, or otherwise difficult behavior.
- Provides leadership to efforts create and sustain an inclusive living and learning environment where all students feel welcomed, valued, and supported.
- Consults with faculty, staff, and parents on issues pertaining to student behavior and student success.
- Honors student privacy laws related to sensitive information and communication.
- Assists students in resolving complaints and grievances.
- Plans and implements staff development programs and resources for all Student Affairs staff.
- Serves as one of the University’s Deputy Title IX Coordinators.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
EDUCATION: Master’s degree in counseling, student development, higher education administration or related field.
EXPERIENCE: Progressive and substantive administrative experience (at least 10 years) as a senior or executive level position in student affairs with demonstrated success and increased levels of responsibility and accountability. Experience working in student affairs in at least one of the following areas with at least 5 years of leadership at the director level or higher. Commitment to student engagement and learning theory in practice. Excellent interpersonal, communication and analytical skills. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, belonging and equity as central tenants of student development and community engagement. High degree of personal integrity and strong sense of ethics. Ability to formulate and implement policies and procedures. Effective resource management, budgeting, staff development and supervision and problem solving skills.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of legal requirements of student conduct, Title IX, etc.
- Refined skills in the areas of supervision and interpersonal relationship building.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully manage programs for under-represented student populations.
- Demonstrated ability in counseling students and advising students and student groups.
- Demonstrated organizational and executive ability.
- Thorough knowledge of student leadership and development issues and processes.

- Excellent oral, written and presentation skills.
- Position requires significant evening and weekend commitments (largely to attend student programs and events) and serving as the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs’ designee as requested which requires 24/7 on-call response
- Demonstrated experience associated with the management and operation of behavioral intervention teams, care and advocacy, new student and family programs, student conduct, multicultural programs & services, women’s center, and religious and spiritual life
- Well versed in social media
- NABITA threat assessment certification
- Earned doctoral degree
- Experience in a union environment
