Job Summary

The Wadsworth Lab at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass, Amherst), in a collaborative project with the Ross Lab at Syracuse University, seeks a Post Doctoral Research Associate to perform research on mitotic spindle dynamics and mechanics.  This will include generating mammalian cells using CRISPR or siRNA to test candidate MAPs in spindle function. The appointee is expected to establish some independence in research design and execution, and to publish her/his work as appropriate in collaboration with the principle investigators. 

This is a benefited, full-time Post-Doctoral position.  Initial appointment is for one year; reappointment beyond the first year is contingent upon job performance. The project is aimed at understanding the mitotic spindle, including the regulation of microtubule severing enzymes and kinesins.

 

Essential Functions

Examples of duties:

  • Culturing and maintenance of mammalian cell lines.
  • Observing living cells using spinning disc confocal microscopy.
  • Using molecular methods to modify genes in mammalian cells.
  • Performing nucleofection of cells with plasmid DNA and generating additional cell lines.
  • Data analysis using imaging software and excel or Matlab.
  • Results of in vivo experiments can also be tested using various in vitro assays with purified microtubules, motors and MAPs.

 

Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness. 
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Ph.D. in cellular/molecular biology, biophysics or a related field by the time of hire.

 

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Experience working with mammalian cells, ability to use molecular biology methods for generating constructs, protein purification, data analysis and confocal microscopy.
  • Demonstrated record of publishing research, an interest in interdisciplinary research and experience in mentoring undergraduate students.

Typical lab environment.

 

Work Schedule

Full time, 40 hours a week.

 

Salary Information

Salary will commensurate with experience.
