Job Summary

Asbestos Worker Apprentices (Apprentices I through III) perform project work commensurate with training and experience at the appropriate level to acquire practical experience in the skills of abatement, removal, repair and cleaning of hazardous building materials including: asbestos, lead, PCBs, heavy metals, molds and other hazardous building materials.; attend assigned classes to acquire training, instruction, information, and certification related to the appropriate level; and perform related work as required. Apprentice I is the entry-level trade job in the series.

With supervisory guidance, the Asbestos Worker Apprentice (hereafter referred to as the Apprentice) provides support, abatement, removal, repair and cleaning of hazardous building materials including: asbestos, lead, PCBs, heavy metals, molds and other hazardous building materials. This includes but is not limited to: duct work, floors, ceilings, crawl spaces, excavations, demolitions, windows and other areas of interior and exterior of buildings. The Apprentice also attends classroom training during work hours to complete requirements for a series of different licensures over the course of three years.

 

Essential Functions

All duties and responsibilities are subject to the completion of necessary training, acquiring the necessary licensures and under the direction of a licensed Asbestos and Lead Abatement Supervisor.

  • Within the first year, learn to serve as a Certified Asbestos Worker during asbestos containing material (ACM) abatement related activities. During the second and third years, learn to serve as a Certified Asbestos Supervisor.
  • Within the first year, learn to serve as a Certified Lead Worker during lead containing material (LCM) abatement related activities. During the second and third years, learn to serve as a Certified Lead Supervisor.
  • Attend classroom training during work hours to complete requirements for a series of different licensures over the course of three years.
  • Learn to maintain necessary records and prepare requested reports in connection with the apprenticeship.
  • Learn to maintain assigned tools, equipment, and working areas in clean, neat, and orderly condition; use prescribed safety equipment and follow safety rules.
  • With supervisory guidance, learn to provide support for asbestos abatement or lead work activities for various construction operations by setting up ventilation equipment, erecting staging (wood or metal), cutting access holes, removal of containments or barriers and making minor repairs to building which were damaged as a result of abatement work.
  • With supervisory guidance, learn to evaluate the conditions and accessibility of hazardous building materials and conduct activities according to procedures described in current EPA guidance documents, applicable Federal Laws, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) 310 CMR 7.00 and other rules and regulations.
  • With supervisory guidance, learn to conduct the abatement, removal, repair and/or cleaning of hazardous building materials including: asbestos, lead, PCBs, heavy metal, mold and other hazardous building materials. This includes but is not limited to: duct work, floors, ceilings, walls, crawl spaces, excavations, demolitions, windows and other areas of interior and exterior of buildings.
  • With supervisory guidance, learn to conduct the reinstallation of various insulations on duct work, piping system and other mechanical application. Perform the reinstallation of building systems including: flooring, ceilings, walls and glass.
  • With supervisory guidance, learn to apply carpentry techniques using carpentry tools to construct, alter, repair, and/or install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, and doors in Campus Buildings. This includes interpreting or sketching layouts of work to be conducted and other related work as required.
  • Wear personal protective equipment as required, including respiratory protection, and work under potentially hazardous conditions.
  • Operate various departmental vehicles to make routine deliveries of hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
  • Comply with University policies and guidelines

 

Other Functions

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Currently employed in good standing as Maintainer I in Facilities & Campus Services.
  • Must be willing to complete an annual occupational physical and pulmonary function test, as required.
  • Current and valid Class D driver’s license.
  • Able to pass a medical history and pulmonary function test and to pass a respiratory fit test.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instruction.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
  • With training, ability to climb and stage equipment such as ladders, scaffolding, and rigging.
  • With training, ability to use hand-held power tools and skill in using hand-held power tools as well as hand-held tools such as a hammer, chisel, and tape measure.
  • With training, ability to learn and apply principles and techniques of: Carpentry, window repair, glazing, lead and asbestos abatement.
  • With training, ability to read, interpret, and apply standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • With training, work in confined spaces.
  • Stand for prolonged periods of time; lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Work overtime on an as needed basis.
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic.

 

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

May stand for long periods of time; lift heavy objects and equipment; be exposed to the hazards of sharp tools and running machinery; climb and work from ladders; work outdoors in all types of weather; work under exposure to heat, cold, and other adverse conditions, such as noxious gas and fumes; work in confined areas; and be on a standby (on-call) work status.

 

Additional Details

By the end of the Apprenticeship cycle (stages I – III), Apprentice will be able to meet all the minimum qualifications of the then current Form 30 for the Maintenance Technician II (Asbestos, Glass and Carpentry)/ESU.

 

Work Schedule

Mon- Fri 7AM- 3PM Work overtime on an as needed basis.
