General Summary of Position:

The Master Teacher in the School of Education will work with mathematics, science and engineering undergraduate students enrolled in the UTEACH UMass Lowell STEM teacher preparation program. S/he will teach and advise students as well as coordinate and supervise their placements in local schools.

This is a part-time/temporary, non-benefited professional staff/adjunct position.

Main Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will teach one section of the 3 credit methods course Introduction to STEM Teaching.
  • Perform observations of teacher candidates in the field teaching their lessons from the course assigned and the other section of the course (additional compensation and travel expenses provided for field observations)
  • Mentor and advise students in the course

The successful candidate will teach a pre-designed course exercising discretion and independent judgment in his/her teaching executing the UTEACH model with fidelity. As part of the training to teach this course the candidate will be required to observe and assist the instructor of another section of the same course for additional compensation.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • M.Ed. or MAT
  • Undergraduate degree in a life or physical science or engineering (not science education)
  • Five years of experience teaching science in a middle school (Grades 6 – 8)
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse groups

Additional Considerations:

  • Knowledge of common core standards and science frameworks
  • Experience supervising student teachers
  • Knowledge of local school systems
  • Massachusetts (5-8) science certification preferred
  • Extensive experience utilizing instructional technology to enhance science teaching
