Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of Student Career Development in the Career Hub, the Assistant Director curates, plans and oversees career development resources and activities for undergraduates from the University Without Walls Department of Interdisciplinary Studies and the BDIC program in cooperation with dean(s), directors, academic advisors, faculty, Hub colleagues, and campus career professionals. Tailored to the needs of learners with varying work backgrounds and the particular program and concentrations, these activities include identifying career content for multiple sources, individual career advising, career education programs and employer networking events. Provides marketing and outreach from the central Career Development and Professional Connections Hub/Career Services.

 

Essential Functions

  • With the Associate Provost for Career & Professional Development, dean(s), directors, faculty and advisors, designs and implements strategies which maximize student participation in career activities and may include facilitating workshops, presentations and events involving employers and alumni.
  • Instructs and advises individual students via virtual platforms such as Zoom, phone, email or in-person as appropriate, by facilitating student’s transition to professional settings with newer UMass educational credentials; educates on job-search process including UMass Amherst specific resources; advises students on internship opportunities.
  • Curates career-related content from multiple sources and communicates information to students via in-person, online and written courses.   
  • Administers and interprets recognized career assessment tools; advises students about career options related to their interests and qualifications and availability of employment opportunities.
  • Creates collaborative programming, and contributes to the creation of efficient and effective career preparation for all students. Initiates and presents various career education workshops/workshops remotely or in person when appropriate.
  • Instructs administrators and advisors about career resources available, serves as a liaison, and collaborates on classes, programs and events.
  • Coordinates outreach and marketing of career-related services, resources and opportunities to students, faculty, and administrators, and general public through appropriate channels.
  • Initiates and helps the Career Development Hub to manage recruiting relationships with the goal of improving the number and range of employment opportunities available; networks with employers and obtains job and field experience listings as appropriate.

 

Other Functions

  • Participates in regularly scheduled unit meetings; participates in ongoing professional development activities.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, business or other relevant field of study.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in college career advising, recruiting/HR staffing, or field experience activities with current knowledge of the changing job market. 
  • Ability to use technology efficiently; Microsoft applications; Excel, Google Docs, and virtual technology platforms, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.  

 

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Familiarity with career assessment tools such as Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Clifton StrengthsFinder, Focus2, etc. and career management systems such as Handshake.

Additional Details

  • Functions independently within the broad scope of departmental and University policies and goals. Refers exceptions to Director of Student Career Development.
  • Average number of student employees supervised at any given time:1-2

 

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday; 8:30am – 5pm

May work nights or weekends as needed.
