Job Summary

The Associate Director of Leadership Development serves as a member of a larger team of professionals and provides leadership, vision, direction and support through programmatic and strategic efforts for a comprehensive co-curricular leadership development program. Under the leadership of the Senior Director of Student Organization Development and Management, the Associate Director will direct and implement ongoing visioning, development, and assessment of leadership experiences outside of the classroom. This position will provide supervision, training, and support to direct reports, campus partners, undergraduate and graduate students.


Essential Functions

Student Leadership Development, Learning, Outreach & Education

  • Oversee departmental efforts to design, implement, evaluate, and revise a centralized comprehensive leadership development program inclusive of vision, mission, values, strategic goals and model development
  • Manage, train, and develop professional, graduate, and student staff
  • Develop, monitor, and manage departmental budgets, resources and expenditures
  • Direct and lead initiatives and experiences to help students understand Leadership and Service as it relates to career preparation and their personal lives
  • Work collaboratively on a regular basis with University partners to coordinate co-curricular programs and activities to engage students
  • Direct a comprehensive leadership development program built upon an innovative Leadership Theory model where experiences are intentionally and developmentally structured to allow students to grow in skills and levels of engagement from emerging to advanced
  • Direct and lead programs that increase student participation in leadership and service, including campus events, volunteer opportunities, and advising student groups
  • Design the curriculum for a Leadership Development Academy consistent with national standards, best practices, learning outcomes, and the division core competencies
  • Design and implement a service engage model to complement the leadership development program
  • Oversee, lead and direct leadership development training sessions for students and campus departments
  • Serve as a liaison for campus partners concerning leadership development
  • Develop and submit progress reports on co-curricular leadership development and service engagement
  • Develop an assessment plan that will identify student learning outcomes and create opportunities that promote learning, leadership and service
  • Stay current on trends that support student development
  • Manage projects and special events as assigned by the Senior Director of Student Organization Development and Management

Department and University Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Leadership Development unit of Student Engagement & Leadership
  • Develop proposals and reports for policy, programs, and other initiatives that align with department goals and objectives
  • Serve on a variety of University committees and initiatives to guide best practices for student leadership development
  • Identify grant opportunities and funding sources for department initiatives and apply for relevant grants at the local, state, and/or national level
  • Participate on Student Affairs and Campus Life, University, and/or community committees, coalitions, task forces, and/or search committees as approved by supervisor
  • Contribute to the planning of the Student Engagement & Leadership budget and determine financial resources needed for initiatives and programs
  • As assigned by supervisor, act as a liaison with other specific campus partners


  • Supervise 2 professional staff who supports CEPA and Co-Curricular Leadership and Co-Curricular Learning & Assessment
  • Supervise 1-2 graduate students who will support Co-Curricular leadership opportunities.


Other Functions

  • Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.
  • Understands responsibilities with respect to Title IX, Clery and other compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrates capacity, skill and willingness to engage students and contribute to student success.
  • Works collaboratively with other campus stakeholders to fulfill the mission of Student Affairs and Campus Life.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Business, Social Science, or closely related field with five (5) years’ experience of progressively responsible, full-time student development, student leadership development, including three (3) years in a supervisory capacity.  OR Master's Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or College Student Development or related degree with three (3) years of progressively responsible, full-time student development, student leadership development, including three (3) years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Experience with budget development and resource allocations
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive work teams
  • Proven ability to work effectively with widely diverse colleagues, students, and stakeholders. Excellent organizational communication, and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to work cooperatively, and collaboratively
  • Ability to write clear and concise policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Experience using personal computers, including experience with Windows, MS Office (Work, Excel) software and on-line resource development such as Web page production

  • Typical office environment activity


Work Schedule

  • 37.5 hour per week position.  Some nights and weekends required.
