The Department of Crime & Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth invites applications for a two-year, Assistant Teaching Professor position, with the possibility of renewal, starting September 1, 2023.  The department is home to a multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary faculty from the Social Sciences and Humanities with research and teachings that offer critical and intersectional perspectives on crime, justice, criminology, and the legal systems. 

A critical and interdisciplinary understanding of justice rooted in intersectionality is a requirement for teaching in the department. Applicants are invited from fields drawing upon Justice Studies; Criminology; Critical Race Studies; Critical Geography; Black Studies; Queer Studies; Women’s and Gender Studies; American Studies; Ethnic Studies; Indigenous and Native American Studies; Latinx Studies; Chicanx Studies; Abolitionary Histories and Futures; Critical Whiteness Studies; Sociology; Legal Studies; Politics; Transnationalism; and related fields.

The selected candidate will teach required courses in the program, including but not limited to, “Introduction to Crime and Justice Studies;” “A History of Criminology;” “Foundations in Justice Studies;” and “Abolitionism.” In addition, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to teach a variety of upper-level elective topic courses such as “The Politics of Policing;” “Racism, Crime, and Justice;” “Transformative Justice;” and “The Prison Industrial Complex.”  Additional courses from our listings may be available depending upon the area of expertise, including online teaching opportunities.  There may also be the potential to create and offer courses in related topics of interest that are not yet in the curriculum. 

This position carries a 4-4 teaching load (or 12 teaching credits per term) and includes academic advising responsibilities. All applicants must provide a teaching portfolio that includes a teaching statement and evidence of effective undergraduate classroom instruction. 

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is one of five UMass campuses, located on the South Coast of Massachusetts between Cape Cod and Rhode Island in a region well known for its beautiful beaches and scenic harbors. About an hour from Boston and 45 minutes from Providence, the South Coast provides opportunities for rural or urban living with access to major metropolitan areas and natural coastal environments.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree is required at the time of the start date, 1 September 2023, for appointment as Assistant Teaching Professor.  ABDs and MAs may be considered for hire at the Instructor level with the possibility of promotion to Assistant Teaching Professor.
  • Teaching experience is required with documented proficiency. 
  • Applicants must be authorized for employment in the U.S. on a full-time basis. Employment-based visa sponsorship is not available.
