OFFICIAL JOB TITLE:  Program Coordinator for College Now

REPORTS TO:  Director of College Now

SUPERVISES: Provides functional supervision for student program activities.  Regularly supervises assigned work-study and peer counselor students.

SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:  The Program Coordinator is responsible for assisting with student activities of the College Now Program.  The incumbent will assist the Director with the planning and implementation of various events and programs along with maintaining an active student counseling caseload.  The incumbent will also work on admissions tasks and marketing materials such as the program brochure and website information.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for a full counseling caseload (25-30 students), to include recruiting, testing, interviewing, individual and group counseling, and student advocacy.
  • Conduct initial review of admission applicants to ensure program eligibility and appropriate admissions route.
  • Assists in the planning and administration of the diagnostic educational testing, including GPA calculation for applicants
  • Assists in providing operational oversight of student program activities to promote student connection including but not limited to freshman gatherings, program workshops, guest speakers and program mentor activities
  • Establishes collaborative relationships with other departments, such as Career Development Center, International Student Programs and Undergraduate Research, etc.
  • Provides assistance to the Director pertaining to maintenance of the program policy manual.
  • Instructs first year experience course (UNV 101) which provides self-empowerment and academic skill-building sessions for the group of freshmen in the assigned counselor caseload.  Maintaining currency in the learning development field through individual study, in-services, workshops, and occasional travel. 
  • Assists in the planning, development, and implementation of all phases of the College Now Program, to include the College Now Orientation, the Fall Academic Program, and other Program components.  Assists in the organization of particular components as directed.
  • Gathers statistical information and compiles such into reports periodically throughout the school year as directed.
  • Assists in the development of the counseling component of the Program, to include:  staff in-service training, evaluating and developing counseling services both for the freshmen and upperclassmen.
  • Participates on committees internal to the Program, internal to the University, and external to the University, when needed to ensure the goals of the College Now Program.
  • Maintain and Update Program webpage for relevant content
  • Compose and distribute quarterly newsletter in collaboration with counselor and peer mentors
  • Maintain Social Media communications for internal and external audiences
  • Lead Lecture Appreciation Days event
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • EDUCATION:    Master’s Degree
  • EXPERIENCE:  Demonstrated experience, (5 or more years) in a post-secondary academic or student support program with some administrative duties.  Experience in the policies and procedures of a university Community.
  • OTHER: Available during peak periods of the program activity to include occasional Saturday, Sunday or evening work (such as during testing, Program Banquet, Experience UMD, Open House, or College Now Freshmen Orientation).  Local and regional travel required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in counseling or related field.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with students from underserved populations.
  • Significant experience, (5 or more years) in a post-secondary academic or student support program with some administrative duties. 
  • Working knowledge of regional high schools, community organizations, associations and programs which support the mission, goals and objectives of the College Now Program.
  • Capable of expressing a vision for the College Now Program which would take it into the twenty-first century.
  • Experience teaching diverse populations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with students from underserved populations.
  • Ability to understand and relate to underrepresented students.
  • Ability to work with students both on an individual basis as well as in group settings.
  • Ability to understand detailed university policies and procedures, communicating them to the public and processing applicants.
  • Ability to facilitate the academic success of college students.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and public-speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well, orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects independently.

SALARY:  $63,389.00- $81,225.65
