General Summary of Position:

The successful applicant will conduct analytical, computational and experimental research in the areas of structural health and condition monitoring, controls, and diagnostics of engineering structures with an emphasis on development of signal and image processing algorithms using audio-visual signals and machine learning-enhanced techniques for improved system and structural response. The successful candidate will also assist in writing scholarly articles and research proposals, help to manage and educate graduate or undergraduate students, and assist in the successful operation of the laboratories and facilities.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education:

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering/Science

Experience:

  • Minimum five years of experience (including MS and PhD. research experience) in research related to sensing, monitoring and decision making.

Skills:

  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Outstanding technical report writing and communication skills
  • Experience in the development of computer vision and machine learning algorithms and models for structural health monitoring/nondestructive evaluation/controls
  • Knowledge of image and audio segmentation, detection, classification, and automated detection techniques
  • Familiarity with evaluation techniques for pattern recognition. Algorithm generation for automated detection of different operating conditions, terrains and geometries for improved detection and controls of systems and structures.
  • Prior experience with human subject testing

Additional Considerations:  

  • Publications in the field of signal and image processing and machine learning relevant to conduct research in the field of sensing, monitoring and decision making using experimentally, analytically and computationally generated data for improved system and structural health monitoring.
  • Ability to work independently, with limited direction, as well as within a team environment
  • Ability to mentor and inspire students with limited research experience

This is a Grants & Contracts (MTA/GRACE) bargaining unit position.

This position is contingent upon funding. The initial appointment will be for one-year with a possibility of renewal based on the productivity and performance and the availability of funding.
