Job Summary:
The University Information Technology Services (UITS) department of the University of Massachusetts is seeking a Digital Experience Intern who wants to become part of a dynamic team of technology professionals supporting the institution's mission, “To enable UMASS to provide an affordable and accessible education of high quality and to conduct programs of research and public service that advance knowledge and improve the lives of the people of the Commonwealth, the nation and the world.”
The Digital Experience team at the UMass President’s Office is seeking a current UMass student to work as a digital accessibility intern to support our overall digital accessibility efforts. We are seeking a UMass student that wants to learn about disability inclusion in the digital space. You will receive full access to our digital accessibility training suite, gain an understanding of the various types of assistive technology used by the disability community, and help us with digital accessibility activities happening across the President’s Office.
This internship is fully remote with working sessions happening via the Zoom meeting tool.
Essential Functions:
The Digital Experience Intern has the following responsibilities:
- Run weekly digital accessibility reports for our public facing websites and identifying any issues that need to be addressed.
- Complete digital accessibility and assistive technology training.
- Assist with manual testing of third-party products using common assistive technologies (e.g., screen readers, display modes, text to speech software, zoom and magnification, speech recognition software, etc.)
- Provide guidance to content editors on how to remediate inaccessible content.
- Help us remediate public-facing content where needed.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):
- Current UMass student who is enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program of study
- GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Curious, motivated and willingness to learn new technologies and skills
- Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS
- Knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 A and AA requirements.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when interacting with staff.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):
- Experience with version control systems such as GitHub
- Experience with content management systems such as Drupal
