Normal Work Schedule:

Standard full-time work schedule consisting of five, eight-hour days and 40 hours each week. Work performed in addition to regular work hours may be necessary, and may require a change in availability at specific times, to accommodate for variations in work demands.

Job Summary:

The University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute’s Economic and Public Policy Research group (EPPR) conducts a range of customized economic and demographic data analysis and policy studies on topics of interest to policymakers in government, business, and academia. The Population Estimates Program (PEP) at EPPR works on behalf of the Commonwealth to ensure that Census Bureau population data for Massachusetts and its geographies are as accurate as possible by providing updates and corrections to component data including: group facilities population counts, municipal housing unit changes, and vital statistics data. The program also produces independent population estimates and projections and provides technical support to cities and towns in correcting Census Bureau counts. Finally, the program disseminates Census and other population data to the public by means of data display and summary reports published on-line. Research Analysts perform the work of PEP through direct survey work to facilities and municipalities and also through data research, organization, display and analysis.  The position may entail significant writing duties and independent task or project management. Typically, Research Analysts in PEP work collaboratively under the direction of the PEP Manager, the State Data Center Manager, and/or the EPPR Director.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct data analysis with office software, expertise in specialized software such as STATA, SPSS, or ArcView GIS;
  • Support managers in the presentation and review of analytical findings with clients. Identify and utilize public data sources from a wide range of Federal, State and Local data providers, including the U.S. Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as well as private data providers to extensively analyze social, economic, and demographic conditions;
  • Prepare charts and tables, maps, memoranda, and write sections of reports;
  • In addition to quantitative methods, Research Analysts conduct field research through interviews, surveys, and literature reviews;
  • Support managers in the presentation and review of analytical findings with clients.

Other Functions:

  • Share expertise with colleagues within the unit;
  • Assist student research assistants,  and other staff, as necessary and directed by supervising manager;
  • Proactively communicate the capabilities of EPPR, as well as the Institute in general, to potential and existing clients;
  • Other duties as assigned requested by the Director and/or supervising managers, to support the effective operation of the project and group.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):

  • Bachelor’s degree in sociology, economics, public policy, planning, geography or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to work independently, and engage in collaborative research in a team setting. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional office software; experience with GIS software, database software such as Access, Stata, or a similar statistical software package, and/or related social science analytical software.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):

  • Master’s Degree preferred in the one of the following or related disciplines: sociology, economics, public policy, planning, or geography.
  • Academic training and practical experience with demographic research and experience in downloading, organizing, and manipulating large datasets.
  • Relevant professional experience.

Working Conditions:

  • Multiple hours in stationary position and using office equipment and computers. Environment is a busy, collegial office area resulting in multiple interruptions and requests for assistance.
  • This role requires strong attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines, a respect for confidentiality requirements, high levels of accuracy and organization.
  • Conduct work in an office-based, collegial environment allowing regular communication with supervising managers.
  • Research Analysts must have flexibility to travel on an as-need basis within Massachusetts and occasionally outside of the Commonwealth to attend meetings, conduct field-based data collection and conduct training.
  • The physical/mental demands and work environment factors described above are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Additional Details:

  • Salary range $42,000- $46,000
  • This position is funded by grants and/or contracts, and is contingent upon funding;
  • This is a full time benefited position;
  • No relocation assistance provided;
