REPORTS TO: The Associate Director of Financial Aid Operations and Compliance
SUPERVISES: Exercises functional supervision of clerical staff and student employees in the performance of assigned duties.
SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Student Loan Manager is responsible for the administration of the all educational loan programs processed through the Financial Aid Office; including Federal Direct, Federal Perkins/Nursing, Federal Nurse Faculty, and private loan programs. Manages all functions of loan programs; including loan origination, certification, disbursement, reconciliation, compliance and program integrity.
Follows the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention, and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.
EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administer federal and private student loan programs in accordance with federal/state financial aid regulations, program guidelines issued by the United States Department of Education, and established institutional policies and procedures.
- Manage all functions related to federal loan processing; including loan eligibility, origination, error resolution, certification, disbursement and borrower requirements. Reconcile federal loan disbursements between the U.S. Department of Education Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) and university’s information systems database on a monthly basis and complete year end closeout. Work closely with the Bursar’s Office to insure cash receipts are credited to student accounts and reconciled appropriately.
- Responsible for the management of all Federal Direct Parent and Graduate Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) applications approvals and denials and all actions required for processing.
- Responsible for the management of all private education loan funds including certification with lender, awarding, disbursement, and reconciliation. Serve as the campus representative of the annual Boston-Dartmouth-Lowell (BDL) Private Loan Request for Information (RFI) process to select lenders for the university’s preferred lender list.
- Review students who are close to or at federal loan aggregate limits and Subsidized Loan Eligibility Limit (SULA) and package financial aid award or adjust award accordingly.
- Serve as the University’s subject matter expert related to all loan processing. Maintain a solid and expanding knowledge of financial aid rules, regulations, policies, procedures, guidelines, and best practice to ensure compliance with federal, state and institutional rules and regulations pertaining to student eligibility and loan processing. Document all institutional policies and procedures related to student/parent educational loan programs. Work with financial aid systems staff to ensure changes and updates to loan regulations, laws, and eligibility criteria are reflected within system, institutional policies and procedures and consumer information.
- Act as a liaison between student loan recipients and the Department of Education loan servicing/origination center and private lenders to troubleshoot issues and concerns.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive default management program. Initiate financial aid literacy and counseling workshops with students to educate them about their responsibilities as a borrower. Administer follow-up and tracking activities in accordance with default management procedures.
- Maintain auditable student files and program records in accordance with federal and state regulations, as well as institutional policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with Financial Aid Office report writer to develop and maintain reports to effectively manage and enhance loan processing and reconciliation.
- Conduct financial aid informational activities, such as entrance and exit counseling sessions, financial literacy information sessions, orientation, open house, and similar public speaking engagements on and off campus.
- Assist as needed with student caseload of prospective and matriculated students as needed on tasks including, but not limited to, financial aid application and award eligibility (including C Flags), verification, award changes, appeals, satisfactory academic progress appeals, Return of Title IV Funds and State withdrawal refund calculations, and loan borrowing.
- Perform other duties as required by supervisor.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree
EXPERIENCE: Demonstrated experience (over three years) in office administration as demonstrated through work in a professional environment.
OTHER: Ability to work evenings/weekends. Occasional local and regional travel.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including public speaking engagements.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities concurrently.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Ability to meet and deal effectively with others and provide superior customer service.
- Ability to counsel students.
- Must be extremely detail-oriented and accurate.
- Solid knowledge of Title IV federal financial aid regulations.
- Experience using the People Soft system (or similar student information system).
