Job Summary
Supervises and participates in the performance of general custodial duties including the cleaning of a building or a group of buildings.
Essential Functions
- Exercises supervision by directing the work of a number of custodial employees to ensure well-organized and completed tasks; assists in planning work schedules and assignments in consultation with a Supervisor of Janitors to ensure equitable assignments.
- Trains employees in cleaning methods and tasks by demonstration and on-the-job training to ensure knowledgeable personnel.
- Maintains custodial records including attendance, maintenance, supplies and inventories by updating reports regularly to provide accurate and timely building data.
- Supervises and participates in all waste removal and the cleaning of waste receptacles to provide sanitary conditions.
- Supervises and participates in the cleaning of restrooms and replenishing paper products, soap products and sanitary napkin dispensers.
- Supervises and participates in the care of carpeted areas to prolong carpet life and maintain cleanliness.
- Supervises and participates in the care of hard floor surfaces to prolong life of floor surfaces and maintains cleanliness.
- Supervises and participates in maintaining walls, ceilings, doors, furniture and horizontal surfaces in a clean and attractive state.
- Supervises and participates in the cleaning of glass, both interior and exterior, to provide a clean and attractive facility.
- Supervises and participates in keeping exterior areas immediately adjacent to the building clean by sweeping and snow shoveling and applies sand or chemicals necessary to ensure a safe and attractive environment.
- Supervises and participates in performing simple repairs by replacing belts, tightening screws, and cleaning equipment in order to keep all machinery and equipment in good working condition.
- Supervises and participates in the replacement of light bulbs and/or fluorescent tubes and the washing of light fixtures to maintain a safe and well-lighted environment.
- Locks and unlocks premises to maintain security and provide ease of entry.
- Supervises and participates in the arrangement of furniture and the set up and knock down of tables, chairs, and tarpaulins for various University functions.
- Inspects buildings by physically touring facilities to assure furniture is properly placed, assesses cleanliness and state of repair, and reports on conditions found.
- Supervises and participates in the removal of water from the premises to prevent damage and maintain an attractive facility.
- Operates motor vehicle to travel to work sites.
- Practices and promotes excellent customer service in the workplace and exhibits a clear commitment to the diverse need of customers.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
- A minimum of two (2) years' experience in a custodial capacity.
- The ability to perform manual labor tasks for long periods of time including working under extreme weather conditions.
- Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays and rotating shifts.
- Possess a current and valid Class “D” Driver’s License.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to physically perform manual tasks, climb stairs, lift ladders and bend.
- Ability to train and instruct employees.
- Ability to plan and organize work schedules.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Ability to maintain records and make reports.
- Ability to read and write.
- Knowledge of materials, equipment and methods commonly employed in cleaning operations.
- Ability to operate and care for equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor machines and automatic scrubbers.
- Ability to prepare and apply cleaning solutions safely and efficiently.
- Ability to use a computer, including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work with others.

- Enhancement of supervision, training and communication skills.
- Knowledge of University Health and Fire Regulations.

Additional Details

This position is essential. This includes the obligation to work overtime, to return to work between scheduled shifts when directed, and to report to work during any delays, early departures, and closures. It is your responsibility to update the service desk with your current phone numbers.

Receives direct supervision from the Supervisor of Janitors.
Work Schedule
- Saturday to Wednesday 7am-3pm (Thurs/Fri RDO).
