SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Instructional Designer works collaboratively with faculty and subject matter experts to provide pedagogical consultations, course design for of face-to-face, hyflex, online and blended learning courses, ensuring deadlines are met and quality guidelines are adhered to. The Instructional Designer is responsible for providing expert consultation and assistance to UMass Dartmouth faculty in the design and delivery of high quality and effective courses and technology-mediated teaching and learning initiatives. The designer will develop and train faculty on teaching pedagogies, instructional strategies, course design and instructional technologies. The Instructional Designer provides excellent customer service to our campus community in support of the academic and research mission at UMass Dartmouth. Follows the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention and assists in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works one-on-one with faculty to develop and provide recommendations for developing objectives, sequencing of instruction, use of assessments, and design of course materials and activities
  • Incorporates the campus’s portfolio of instructional technologies into course design and provides related technical support, including, but not limited to lecture capture, web conferencing, and classroom technology
  • Advises faculty regarding accessibility criteria, assessment methods, and teaching strategies in efforts to achieve ADA compliance in course sites
  • Creates accessible instructional media, enforcing accessibility standards in efforts to achieve ADA compliance in course sites, and teaching faculty how to convert and produce accessible content, and responding to accommodation needs
  • Works closely with the Lead Designer on the development and facilitation of instructional development training courses and workshops in different modalities related to topics such as teaching pedagogies, instructional strategies, or course design
  • Develops documentation, training, and other instructional materials (such as websites and online tutorials) to support the use of technology in teaching & learning
  • Conducts course site reviews as part of the University’s internal review process to ensure quality courses
  • Develops customized course templates for online, blended, and face-to-face programs
  • Evaluates emerging and evolving technologies that will improve or enhance web-based communications and online instructional effectiveness
  • Provides technical and developmental support for users of the university-adopted Learning Management System (LMS) and other technologies in support of teaching and learning
  • Logs inquiries in the IT case management system and ensures resolution in cooperation with the Instructional Development team
  • Works with customers to understand their instructional needs and priorities
  • Documents work and issue resolution for future reference
  • Promotes cross-team and cross-functional collaboration and knowledge sharing
  • Participates in professional development opportunities to stay abreast of emerging technologies and instructional design practices and teaching strategies
  • Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned and/or the job description changed periodically to reflect changing organization needs

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • EDUCATION: Master's degree from an accredited institution in instructional design, instructional technology, education
    or a related field
  • EXPERIENCE: Demonstrated experience (over 3 years) designing online and/or blended college-level courses
  • Demonstrated experience (over 3 years) with a learning management system
  • Significant experience (over 5 years) in higher education
  • OTHER: Available for off-hours, evening, and/or weekends as projects dictate; Some travel may be required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated experience (over 3 years) using Canvas
  • Demonstrated experience (over 3 years) teaching online at the college level

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of learning theories and instructional design in an online environment
  • Applied knowledge of ADA-compliance in teaching and learning
  • Excellent communication, organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to approach projects and problems with a sense of ownership, enthusiasm, and innovation
  • Ability to make written and oral presentations clearly and effectively
  • Strong commitment to excellent customer service
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage expectations

SALARY: $63,389-$81,225.65
