Position Title: Coordinator of Religious and Spiritual Life

Reports to: Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs

 

General Description:

As a member of the campus minister team in the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, lead and coordinate Center efforts to meet the needs of a religiously and spiritually diverse student body. Encourage and support the spiritual and religious development of students and serve as a resource and referral guide to faculty, and staff. As a person of faith, s/he must speak and act as their faith and conscience require. At the same time, their responsibilities as a member of the campus community include working cooperatively within the institution and in support of the University’s larger mission. This is a 5-hour a week, 32 week a year, non-benefitted position.

 

Qualifications

Master’s degree or its equivalent in religious education or ministry and experience in ministry or a related field. Experience working with college students, and specifically, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth students, as a campus minister is required. Programming experience required. Strong interpersonal and excellent communication and administrative skills are critical. Candidates must be able to work effectively with and relate to a diverse, multi-faith student population. High energy, creativity, deep faith, a cooperative spirit and sound judgment are important characteristics.

Responsibilities:

  • In conjunction with university liaison, coordinate bi-weekly Center for Religious and Spiritual Life meetings during the academic year.
  • Assist the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs in efforts to expand campus minister membership and identify community partners to support our students’ diverse faith-based/spiritual needs.
  • Identify opportunities to develop student organization(s) and/or programming (dialogue circles, lecture series, etc) to understand various faith-based/spiritual traditions and explore opportunities for interfaith dialogue and discussion.
  • Coordinate the scheduling and reservation of the reflection room in the campus center and hoteling for dedicated shared and individual office space in the Office of Student Affairs.
  • Coordinate Center for Religious and Spiritual Life participation in Division-wide efforts including: Orientation Programs, Admitted Student Days, Admission Open House, Move-In Day and invocation speakers for Commencement.
  • Prepare and revise budget, quarterly and annual reports including monitor and authorize departmental expenditures and manage and resolve any budgetary issues that arise.
  • Lead a task force to explore and understand UMassD students’ faith-based/spiritual interests and needs and make recommendations to Student Affairs leadership as to how we can best address these needs.
  • Participate in University and Student Affairs functions and committees.
  • Research, develop and prepare recurring and ad hoc reports for the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

Other:  Schedule is approximately the week before the start of fall classes through May commencement with some flexibility to assist during one day of each four orientation sessions in June.
