General Summary:
The Laboratory Technician I is a member of the technical staff of the Biology Department. The technician supports the freshman teaching laboratories by preparing and setting up reagents, equipment, and materials for the labs; assisting faculty and teaching assistants in troubleshooting lab exercises; and maintaining a safe, organized, and efficient lab environment. Reporting to the Laboratory Coordinator, this half-time position plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth daily operation of afternoon and evening laboratory sessions.
Examples of Duties:
Prepare reagents
- equipment, and materials for freshman teaching labs; ensure timely set-up and
take-down for afternoon and evening lab sessions. - Test reagents, calibrate instruments, and confirm functionality of equipment before use.
Lab Operations and Safety
- Clean and sterilize lab spaces and materials, including autoclaving.
- Maintain compliance with safety protocols and ensure secure use of lab rooms and equipment.
Support, Collaboration, and Supervision
- Assist the Laboratory Coordinator and teaching staff in troubleshooting exercises; provide data
and feedback at weekly staff meetings. - Supervise and guide undergraduate student workers as assigned.
Records and Maintenance
- Maintain accurate records of supplies, equipment, and safety logs.
- Monitor inventory and assist with ordering as needed.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field is preferred.
- Experience with general laboratory techniques in biology or related field, including reagent
preparation and operation of basic laboratory equipment. - Demonstrated experience in at least two of the following areas: cell biology, genetics, molecular
biology, microbiology, or biochemistry. - Strong attention to detail and accurate record-keeping skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Computer literacy (especially Microsoft Excel).
- Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and student workers.
- Ability to supervise 1-3 undergraduate student workers.
- Ability to lift and handle supplies and equipment up to 30 lbs
