General Summary of Position:

The Assistant Director of Life Safety meets campus and legal expectations regarding protection of life, property, and assets. This position provides direction and oversight of life safety, life safety systems, building and infrastructure code compliance, for all campus buildings, properties, and infrastructure. Directs the development, implementation, and maintenance of the university wide life safety systems.

Responsibility for life safety systems, public safety inspections and support programs assuring properly functioning as designed and maintained to engineered standards deemed essential to safeguard the greater university community of academic, research, residential, office, and landscape environments. Reports to Executive Director Environmental Health & Safety.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Bachelor's degree in building management, fire safety, engineering, Architectural, Safety, or other related field. 
  • 5 – 7 years of progressive experience working and providing compliant Life Safety systems management, building inspection assessments for compliance. Will consider candidates with an Associates degree at least 7-9 years of directly related experience.
  • Extensive working knowledge and applied experience conducting building envelope life safety compliance and risk assessment audits (safety inspections) in adherence with the adopted Building Code, Life Safety Code, Fire Codes, National Electric Code, plumbing code, gas code, accessibility code, mechanical code and applicable Laws
  • Knowledge of Fire Protection Systems, Fire Codes and Fire Plan requirements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Due to the physical aspects associated with this position, the ability to lift 60 pounds, good visual and hearing ability is required.
  • Availability and ability to work weekends and holidays occasionally.
  • Must have a valid driver’s License and a willingness to drive between campuses and to off campus assignments.

Additional Considerations:

  • Previous Experience developing policy and implementing procedures for Life Safety Systems and general building inspections.
  • Professional experience with asset loss prevention programs.
  • Certified Fire Inspector, Certified Building Inspector, Certified Fire Protection Specialist certifications.
  • Experience working with unionized trade environments.
