General Summary: 

The UMass Boston “Research Computing Systems Professional” job family series of positions (levels 1 through 5) are systems administrators who are responsible for implementing and maintaining IT systems supporting research activities.  The Systems Professional series is a five-level series that supports research facilitation, research data management, high performance computing, high throughput computing, hosting, and other types of systems administration.

The organizational levels in this series include:

  • Research Computing Systems Administrator I (Systems Professional I)
  • Research Computing Systems Administrator II (Systems Professional II)
  • Research Computing Systems Engineer (Systems Professional III)
  • Research Computing Senior Systems Engineer (Systems Professional IV)
  • Research Computing Systems Architect (Systems Professional V)

Examples of Duties: 

RC Systems Administrator I

  • Participate in running RC systems at scale
  • Monitor and maintain the health and integrity of RC systems
  • Upgrading and patching of RC systems
  • Track performance metrics to ensure efficient use of resources
  • Support and collaborate with researchers and other key IT partners (e.g. Network, Security, Operations, and Client Services)
  • Build and maintain relationships across RC teams to support researcher needs
  • Regular professional development to build a diverse set of systems administrative skills
  • Regular review of best practices and process refinement
  • Regularly assist a broad set of researchers through support requests
  • Assist researchers with routine issues in using RC systems

 RC Systems Administrator II

  • Participate fully in building, configuring, and running RC systems at scale
  • Monitor and maintain the health and integrity of RC systems
  • Upgrading and patching of RC systems
  • Assist in implementing robust and secure IT solutions supporting research
  • Assist in defining and tracking performance metrics to ensure efficient use of resources
  • Support and collaborate with researchers and other key IT partners (e.g. Network, Security, Operations, and Client Services
  • Build and maintain relationships with external vendor technicians and engineer
  • Regularly contribute best practices documentation and knowledge transfer
  • May mentor junior staff or student employees
  • Regularly assist a broad set of researchers through support requests
  • Assist researchers in the design and debugging of research workflows
  • Assist in building curriculum and teaching workshops for basic use of RC resources

RC Systems Engineer

  • Participate fully in planning, building, configuring, and running RC systems at scale
  • Monitor and maintain the health and integrity of RC systems
  • Upgrading and patching of RC systems
  • Design and implement robust and secure IT solutions supporting research, including supporting data compliance requirements
  • Define and track performance metrics to ensure efficient use of resources
  • Support and collaborate with researchers and other key IT partners (e.g. Network, Security, Operations, and Client Services)
  • Build and maintain relationships with external vendor technicians and engineers
  • Regularly contribute best practices documentation and knowledge transfer
  • May mentor junior staff or student employees
  • May lead trainings on RC resources
  • Regularly assist a broad set of researchers through support requests
  • Facilitate the design, debugging, and automation of research workflows

RC Senior Systems Engineer

  • Lead the planning, building, and configuration of RC systems at scale
  • Set standards for monitoring and maintaining the health and integrity of RC systems
  • Upgrading and patching of RC systems
  • Design and implement robust and secure IT solutions supporting research, including systems that meet data compliance standards
  • Define and track performance metrics to ensure efficient use of resources
  • Support and collaborate with researchers and other key IT partners (e.g. Network, Security, Operations, and Client Services)
  • Build and maintain relationships with external vendor technicians and engineers
  • Collaborate with and may provide leadership to other personnel within the RC ecosystem
  • Regularly contribute best practices documentation and knowledge transfer
  • May supervise junior staff or student employees
  • Lead trainings on RC resources, including specific software or tools
  • Provide in-depth consultation with researchers through regular engagements

RC Systems Architect

  • Provide expert operational knowledge of RC systems at scale that provides performance improvements in complex environments
  • Develop next generation RC architectures to address compute and data intensive research problems
  • Develop enhancements to maintain integrity of RC systems
  • Collaborate with domain researchers regularly and other key IT partners (e.g. Network, Security, Operations, and Client Services) to address future needs
  • Leads and participates with Systems Engineers within the national RC ecosystem
  • Will lead trainings of RC systems and/or domain research, including specific software or tools
  • Develop next generation workflows or debug complex issues with a deep understanding of cutting-edge technology, software, or tools

Qualifications: 

RC Systems Administrator I

  • Minimum of 2 years’ relevant post-secondary education or relevant work experience, including a combination of these two
  • Knowledge of Linux systems administration

RC Systems Administrator II

  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant post-secondary education or relevant work experience, including a combination of these two
  • Broad knowledge of deployment and administration of RC systems (e.g. storage, compute, virtualization, networking, database, etc.)
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, customer service mindset, and ability to act as trusted advisor

RC Systems Engineer

  • Minimum of 7 years’ relevant post-secondary education or relevant work experience, including a combination of these two
  • Broad knowledge of deployment and administration of RC systems (e.g. storage, compute, virtualization, networking, database, etc.)
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, customer service mindset, and ability to act as trusted advisor
  • Specialized knowledge in specific technologies

RC Senior Systems Engineer

  • Minimum of 9 years’ relevant post-secondary education or relevant work experience, including a combination of these two
  • Broad knowledge of deployment and administration of RC systems (e.g. storage, compute, virtualization, networking, database, etc.)
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, customer service mindset, and ability to act as trusted advisor
  • Specialized knowledge in specific technologies
  • Ability to lead development of specific technologies

RC Systems Architect

  • Minimum of 11 years’ relevant post-secondary education or relevant work experience, including a combination of these two
  • Broad knowledge of deployment and administration of RC systems (e.g. storage, compute, virtualization, networking, database, etc.)
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, customer service mindset, and ability to act as trusted advisor
  • Extensive knowledge in specific technologies
  • Ability to lead development of specific technologies
