 SUPERVISES:

Directly supervises Area Coordinators, Resident Coordinator of Graduate Housing/Assistant Coach and provides leadership, support and all operational aspects of the Residential Education program.  Indirectly supervises all professional, para-professional live in staff to include RD’s, RA’s, GA’s and student staff.

 SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: 

The Assistant Director of Residence Life serves as a key member of the Housing and Residential Education (HRE) department, with oversight of the Residence Life Live-in Professional Staff to support the mission, vision and goals of Housing and Residential Education as well as the University.  The Assistant Director is responsible for the strategic direction, planning and development of a positive and safe residential living and learning experience. This position provides leadership and direction to support a vibrant, diverse and welcoming residential community with a focus on academic success, student leadership, and community development - all grounded within a framework of equity, inclusion, and social justice.  The Assistant Director will develop and implement an assessment strategy for the department to understand the student residential experience.  The Assistant Director follows the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention, and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.

 EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and provide leadership of an inclusive, comprehensive selection, training, and development program for all professional, graduate, and student staff members
  • Actively provides direct supervision of Area Coordinators, Resident Coordinator of Graduate Housing/Assistant Coach and indirect supervision to 5-7 Resident Directors, and up to 100 student employees including RAs/GAs, Housing Assistants, and Community Assistants
  • Oversees the recruitment and selection processes for all professional staff. Provides oversight and guidance for all personnel-related actions necessary for both professional and paraprofessional staff
  • Coordinates and provides oversight for leadership development training for professional staff, including setting goals and professional development plans
  • Oversees the development, coordination, editing, and updating of the standard operational procedures and department/staff manual and updating the calendar of events for the Office of Housing & Residential Education
  • Works collaboratively with offices across campus, including being the primary liaison to the Office of Community Standards, the Counseling Center, Health Services, and University Police Department to provide an optimal student experience for students
  • Develops policy proposals, initiatives, and recommendations, changes, and additions related to retention for both University-owed housing and privatized housing to the Assistant Dean, Director of Housing & Residential Education
  • Engages a diverse student body and staff in fostering a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment that promotes connection to campus life, while maintaining high levels of customer service for students, parents, and campus partners
  • Captures the residential student experience through assessment and creates reports to tell the story of the residential experience by developing an assessment strategy for the department
  • Supports all efforts related to opening and closing of residence halls, including early arrivals, first-year and upperclassmen move-in, break closings, and end-of-semester closing, and facilitates room inspections and damage billing
  • Maintain high visibility with students and staff on campus
  • Serve “on call” on a rotating basis with the housing senior administrative team
  • Coordinate and implement opening weekend, closing weekend procedures, admission events, and other University events
  • Represent the department on committees and in meetings with other Student Affairs and University personnel
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean, Director of Housing & Residential Education

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • EDUCATION: Master’s Degree in student personnel, counseling, higher education, or related field
  • EXPERIENCE: Significant (over five years) experience working with students in a college residential education program. Significant experience supervising full-time professional housing/residence life managers
  • OTHER: Must be available to respond to situations that arise during Holidays, weekends, and evenings. Must be available to serve “on-call” on a rotating basis.  May be required to work in adverse weather conditions

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a multicultural university environment
  • Experience working in an environment covered by a collective bargaining
  • Prior academic initiative and residential living-learning environment experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

  • Demonstrated knowledge in developing and delivering inclusive and learning-centered programs and services that promote student success among diverse populations in student housing. Demonstrated and thorough knowledge of Residential Life operations, programs, and activities. Demonstrated commitment to serving and meeting the needs of a diverse student population
  • Experience in designing, coordinating and evaluating goals, strategies and initiatives aimed at supporting student learning outcomes
  • Ability to conduct assessment and evaluation of housing services and programs, interpret and report data, compare data to benchmarking results, and stay current in trends of research in the field
  • Ability to set program goals, implement projects, and work effectively with the staff, students, departments, and administrators
  • Ability to effectively hire, manage, evaluate, motivate, and supervise both professional and para-professional employees
  • Lead diverse teams to support the operational mission and vision of the department and University by fostering an ethical, inclusive, and collegial work environment
  • Lead varying initiatives through a collaborative, service-oriented, and communicative approach
  • Demonstrated commitment to employee development, recognition, and accountability to further operational goals
