Job Summary

The Network Infrastructure Manager will lead the planning, implementation, and maintenance of robust network infrastructure to support the academic and administrative needs of our institution. This position will play a critical role in ensuring reliable connectivity, security, and scalability across campus, facilitating seamless communication and collaboration among students, faculty, and staff. 

 

Essential Functions

  • Manages the implementation of campus-scale infrastructure deployments; travels to different work locations to perform and supervise project progress. 
  • Collaborates with UMass IT local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) teams, campus stakeholders, and partners to facilitate the installation and disconnection of campus fiber plant circuits and interconnections to and from data centers. 
  • Oversees and forecasts operational usage of campus fiber optic cabling. 
  • Administers the overall maintenance of Campus intermediate distribution frame (IDF) and main distribution frame (MDF) space power, cooling, and access control. 
  • Coordinates with the Design and Construction Management team and campus partners to successfully deploy new and temporary infrastructure under the direction of the UMass IT project management teams. 
  • Manages the routine deployment of networking code through network automation tools and command line interfaces as necessary. 
  • Performs network maintenance activities to ensure the efficient operation of the campus networks, including physical relocation of equipment, software updates, and code changes. 
  • Supervises and schedule work performed by IT networking student employees, temporary staff, and contractors. 

 

Other Functions

  • Works to augment the Assistant director of Networking with additional oversight of the Network Operations team.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • High school degree with 10 years of experience in networking or installation of network-based hardware. 
  • At least 3 years of experience managing employees. 
  • Thorough knowledge of Juniper Networks and Juniper Mist Hardware including installation experience.  
  • Experience leading and managing installation teams.  
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel between campus locations. 
  • Ability to use power tools to demonstrate and perform installations. 

 

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Hold or obtain within 2 years a BISCI RCDD certification.  

 

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Balancing, carrying, pulling/pushing, standing, bending, climbing, driving, reaching, sitting, twisting, and lifting. 
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50lbs of equipment. 

 

Work Schedule

  • Monday-Friday 8am – 4pm.
  • Participates in team on-call rotation.
