The Department of Art Education, Art History & Media Studies in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure-track or tenure) specializing in modern and/or contemporary art history to start September 1, 2025.    

The College seeks a critically-engaged scholar who situates scholarship within a global framework, and with a possible focus on eco-art, media art, postcoloniality, material studies, curatorial practices, and other interdisciplinary investigations. In particular, the College seeks a scholar who emphasizes methodological innovation and is interested in cross-field collaboration within the College and the University, as well as engagement with the wider arts community of the South Coast region.

The successful candidate will be responsible for producing scholarship or creative work commensurate with the requirements for promotion to tenure or full professor and will be expected to develop a program of research that engages undergraduate students and contributes to curricular growth. This individual will also be expected to contribute to the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in the broader college and disciplinary communities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. at time of appointment.
  • Research and teaching agenda grounded in a critical, socially-engaged approach to contemporary art and visual culture.
  • Qualified to teach either a course focused on modern or contemporary art with some geographical specialization within a global framework
  • Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching, including surveys of art history, courses with a focus on General Studies.
  • A strong record of scholarly accomplishments appropriate to the level of appointment.
  • Ability to balance excellent teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Evidence of capacity to collaborate with colleagues and/or faculty from other disciplines and staff collegially.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with, or demonstrated potential to create, immersive or experiential modes of learning, including curatorial work or integrating teaching with creative practices
  • Research emphasis on the intersection of art history and race, ethnicity, gender, class, Indigeneity, postcolonial studies, and/or diaspora studies and/or technology and media studies.
  • Experience working collaboratively with local museums, non-profit and artist-run spaces, and/or community organizations
  • Commitment to proactive departmental service and demonstrating leadership in curriculum development, attracting students to the major, long-term planning for the department
  • Ability or potential to evaluate coursework, personnel, and academic programs, as well as to perform assessment and accreditation and other department management responsibilities 

The College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) at UMass Dartmouth holds NASAD accreditation for both undergraduate and graduate programs. CVPA has over 500 students and is the flagship visual and performing arts college in the UMass college system. In addition to the ten concentrations offered by the Department of Art & Design, CVPA also offers degrees in Art History, Art Education, Music, and Music Education.
