Assistant/Associate Professor in Mathematics (Tenure Track or Tenured)
The Department of Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor, or tenured Associate Professor, with expertise in Mathematics Education, to focus on retention, recruitment, and engagement in first-year mathematics beginning in September 2025. The Department is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in Mathematics Education, to focus on retention, recruitment, and engagement in first-year mathematics.
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is in the beautiful ocean side community of Dartmouth, about an hour south of Boston, half-hour east of Providence, and half-hour west of Cape Cod. The Department of Mathematics has nationally and internationally recognized strengths in scientific computing and computational mathematics. Currently the Department has six Assistant or Associate Teaching Professors. All Department of Mathematics faculty have terminal PhD degrees. The Department participates in the Engineering and Applied Sciences PhD program, and together with the Department of Computing and Information Sciences, runs a master’s degree in data science.
Duties:
The Department of Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is specifically focused on hiring a candidate with demonstrated extensive and successful experience in improving retention, recruitment, and engagement in first-year mathematics. The successful applicant will work with Department of Mathematics colleagues, including several Teaching Professors and with faculty stakeholders across the University, including, but not limited to, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Nursing, and Medical Laboratory Science, focusing on enhancing student success in first year mathematics.
In addition to the essential duties listed above the successful applicant will be expected to have, and continue to develop, an active research agenda, leading to publications and grant applications. Department of Mathematics faculty are required to teach, conduct research and scholarship, and contribute administrative service to the Department, College of Arts and Sciences, and the University.
There are potential collaborations for the successful candidate. The Department of Mathematics has two faculty members with extensive research experience in Mathematics Education, both of whom work closely with mathematics education colleagues in the School of Education, College of Arts and Sciences. The successful applicant will have the possibility to advise Mathematics Education PhD students in the Kaput Center for Research & Innovation in STEM Education.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A PhD in Mathematics Education with a strong mathematics background, (for example a master’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics or Data Science) or a PhD in Mathematics, Statistics or Data Science with demonstrable relevant research and publication in Mathematics Education
- PhD must be completed by August 31, 2025
