General Summary of Position:

The International Student Advisor will review and process cases and maintain documentation pertaining to  F-1  and J-1 Student in non-immigrant visa classifications.

Responsible for creating and maintaining efficient channels of communication and cooperation with all academic and administrative units charged with the task of enhancing the transition, integration, and success of international students at UMass Lowell.

This position will be appointed with the following official roles:

  • F-1 Designated School Official (DSO)
  • J-1 Alternate Responsible Officer.   (ARO)

Essential Job Duties:

Regulatory Functions:

  • Responsible for an assigned international student caseload of current and incoming students in  F-1 status  and J-1 non-immigrant category.   The processing and advising workload will include F-1 and J-1 Initial and Transfer cases, Curricular Practical Training, Pre & Post OPT/STEM, J-1 Academic Training, Reduced Course Load, Extensions, etc.  
  • This position will support the pre-Arrival workflow and act as an ISSO regulatory Point of Contact with UML Admission Offices and international recruitment partners.
  • Participate in ISSO advising session appointments
  • Monitor and manage SUNAPSIS workflow, eform processing and SEVIS reporting as applicable to current caseload
  • Present at the ISSO Informational Coffee Hours, and other campus and intercampus meetings as assigned.

Operational Functions:

  • Responsible for maintaining relevant website content up to date.
  •  Participates in organizing and implementing arrival orientation and welcome sessions for new initial and transfer students
  • Monitors international, national and local events and trends as they relate   to international students’ successful completion of their educational and research objectives.

Campus Liaison & Student Advocate:

  • Presents at conferences and attends immigration workshops, seminar and training sessions to stay up to date with F-1 and J-1 student regulatory developments.
  • Works closely with departments across campus as it relates to the success of F-1 and J-1 students ’experience

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Bachelor’s degree and 1-2 years of experience working with international student populations.  Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience or acquired training in working with and advising international F-1 and J-1 students
  • Exposure to Immigration advising and regulatory compliance
  • Understanding of the pre- arrival process and of the procedural steps needed to function effectively in the SEVIS environment.
  • Experience with data management and analysis preferred
  • Demonstrate a high level of ability in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint to generate and track student and financial data used to generate reports.
  • PeopleSoft Student Records experience required.
  • Experience using a CRM for student support work

  • Ability to work with multiple offices on campus. 
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of students from all areas of the globe.
