Job Summary

Under the direction of the Department Head, the Laboratory Manager is responsible for providing technical support for research and instructional programs and for the day-to-day management of department laboratory facilities.

 

Essential Functions

  • Maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment; coordinate with external vendors.
  • Monitor safety and laboratory training compliance for department personnel.
  • Maintain an inventory of department assets; coordinate with University property office.
  • Support undergraduate capstone and other research projects; liaison with vendors and equipment procurement.
  • Support research laboratories; sensor and transducers and data acquisition hardware and software specification and procurement, software development.
  • Establish new and/or refine existing standard operating procedures for departmental facilities.
  • Troubleshoot defective systems, equipment, components and associated cabling and power supplies.
  • Repair defects found in troubleshooting by direct component repair or replacement of subassemblies as necessary. Calibrate and align instruments as necessary. Perform mechanical repairs as necessary.
  • Develop instructions and trains faculty, students or staff in proper usage of equipment.
  • Serve as building coordinator for all department laboratory space.  Coordinate renovations, refurbishing, moving, and maintenance projects, inventory, and security related issues with laboratories and storage spaces in multiple buildings.
  • Prioritize and coordinate a multitude of simultaneous projects.

 

Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the COE community and across the campus to support the MIE department head and dean strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Diploma and/or certification of completion from a formal vocational or technical school or qualified apprentice program and ten (10) years of experience in research or laboratory facilities – OR- an Associate’s degree and seven (7) years of experience in research or laboratory facilities -OR- a Bachelor’s degree with five (5) years of experience in research or laboratory facilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in experimental setup including:
    • Sensors and instrumentation,
    • Data acquisition,
    • Control hardware and software.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of higher education learning environments.
  • Proven communication skills verbal and written.
  • Data processing skills using LabView, Matlab.
  • Knowledge of Office software Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

 

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • A Masters Degree in electronics technology or similar field with 1 year experience in a higher educational setting.
  • Working knowledge in computer aided design (e.g. Solidworks).

 

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Ability to bend, stoop, and lift and/or carry heavy objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, unassisted.
  • Typical lab/classroom environment

 

Work Schedule

  • Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm.
