General Summary of Position:

Reporting to the Director of Planning and FIS and in support of the Executive Director, the Senior Campus Planner is responsible for supporting the full range of campus planning functions, with an emphasis on space planning associated with institutional growth and evolving department requirements, research lab planning as well as transportation, access improvements, and a sustainable campus environment. 

UMass Lowell has experienced significant yearly growth in enrollment and student retention rates while also increasing its ability to attract research funding.   Concurrently, the University embarked on a major capital construction program.   This growth has presented challenges and opportunities to: expand facilities to accommodate academic and research goals, "right size" existing facilities, modernize older campus buildings and systems, and increase the sustainability of campus facilities and operations.

The Planning, Design and Construction Department is housed within a 180+ person Facilities Management Office.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Degree in Architecture, Urban Design, or Urban Planning (with demonstrated design experience) or related field
  • Experience in or with a university or large academic institutional planning setting
  • Eight (8) or more years of progressively responsible relevant experience in planning, space planning, architecture, programming, urban design, or any equivalent combination of experience preferably in a university or other institutional setting.
  • Current Massachusetts professional registration as an architect, or the ability to obtain registration within 6 months of hiring, or professional degree from an accredited architecture school and 3-5 years experience in professional practice required; American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification with a demonstrated expertise in design and architecture may be considered as an alternative to this requirement
  • Strong written and verbal communication and team building skills.
  • Displays knowledge of and commitment to planning, space planning, and sustainability principles, best practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of building and utility systems, current energy efficient building systems; and energy conservation and management systems; administrative abilities.
  • Knowledge of planning and administration, and current developments in campus planning including social and environmental considerations.
  • Knowledge of design, cost, schedule and constructability of proposed capital projects.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national building and life safety codes and regulations, or ability to assimilate within three (3) months.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple concurrent demands and establish/meet priorities.
  • Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

Additional Considerations:

  • Working knowledge of relevant software used in planning including AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel & Project, Adobe Suite and/or equivalent; facility with REVIT and GIS software strongly preferred.

Knowledge of and experience working within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts regulatory framework for planning, design and construction, including procurement laws preferred.

This is a SEIU 888 Professional Union position, Grade P21. Anticipated salary based on range minimum: $94,293, 25th quartile of $108,437 and midpoint of $122,581.
