General Summary of Position:

The University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applications for a full-time Visiting Faculty of Southeast Asian American / Southeast Asian Diasporic Studies, with a faculty appointment in one of the following departments as appropriate: History, Political Science, or Sociology. This position is renewable for four years, contingent upon successful review and funding.

The successful candidate will have a 3-3 teaching load, developing and teaching courses in Southeast Asian American/Southeast Asian Diasporic and Asian American Studies, including in areas of specialization. Preference for research with Southeast Asian American populations in New England/East Coast. The candidate will also provide significant service to the university’s Center for Asian American Studies and the Asian American Center for Excellence and Engagement. The UMass Lowell Center for Asian American Studies (CAAS, www.uml.edu/research/caas) promotes research and education on Asian Americans, particularly Southeast Asian Americans in New England. The Asian American Center for Excellence and Engagement (AACEE, www.uml.edu/aacee), supported by an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) grant, provides a wide range of resources to support Asian American students. The Visiting Faculty’s service may include promoting community-engaged research and teaching; developing and implementing faculty development workshops to increase faculty members’ awareness of Asian Americans’ educational experiences and outcomes; and advising and mentoring students.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate a clear and active research agenda in Southeast Asian American Studies and at least one year of teaching experience at the undergraduate level. Experience advising students and/or developing Asian American studies curriculum is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Ph.D. in relevant humanities or social science field (ABD will be considered; however, the candidate must have completed the doctorate before the appointment begins)
  • A promising research portfolio with a focus on Southeast Asian American communities
  • At least one year of teaching experience at the undergraduate level
  • Demonstrated potential for curriculum development
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse groups

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Asian American communities, particularly Southeast Asian American communities
