SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Acquisitions & Collection Management Librarian is responsible for providing leadership and guidance in the area of library collections – their procurement and management. Negotiates with vendors and evaluates vendor performance. Manages the day-to-day operations of library acquisitions. Leads participation in cooperative collection development activities with consortia, the UMass libraries, and other partners.

All librarians have leadership responsibilities and contribute to the goals and strategic direction of the library and university through active participation on committees, task forces, and working groups.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • EDUCATION: Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited degree program (or an equivalent international program) before date of appointment
  • EXPERIENCE: Experience in an academic library

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Academic library acquisitions experience
  • Academic library collection management or stacks maintenance project experience
  • Experience using Ex Libris’ Alma library application

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage acquisitions workflows, including vendor source selection; ordering and receiving materials; recordkeeping (purchase order and invoice approval); and expense control for library materials in all forms (print & electronic) for monographs, serials, and databases
  • Plan and oversee collection management activities including the selection, assessment, inventorying, de-selection, and dispersal of library materials
  • Manage bindery operations which include processing periodicals and book repair materials for commercial binding, using vendor supplied software  
  • Recommend titles for purchase by making use of reviews and vendor catalogs; work with librarians and library administration to evaluate prospective additions to the library collection
  • Negotiate with vendors on all aspects of product and service provision, including licenses
  • Participate in the hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating of library staff and student employees
  • Work closely with library accountant to ensure accurate processing of purchase requisitions and invoices
  • Assist in developing and managing the library materials budget, including participation in the allocation process
  • Assist with completion of statistical reports and academic program accreditation activities
  • Evaluate gifts donated to the Library
  • Lead participation in cooperative collection development activities with consortia, the UMass libraries and other appropriate partners
  • Monitor developments within the publishing industry; trends in library collection management; and best practices/standards in library acquisitions
  • Participate in the profession by engaging in research, publishing, presentations/poster sessions, or other activities
  • Support serials evaluations by compiling usage statistics from vendor/publisher sources
  • Prepare reports on acquisitions and collection management activities
  • Attend professional meetings, conferences, and workshops related to collection management, acquisitions, library management and relevant library technologies
  • Contribute to library-wide initiatives
  • Serve on library and university committees
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in Technical Services and other library departments
  • May serve as a liaison to academic departments of colleges (liaison responsibilities include collections analysis as well as information literacy instruction in the assigned areas)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  •  Knowledge of academic library acquisitions and collection management practices
  • Supervisory experience
  • Commitment to achieving a high standard of student-centered library services and student success
  • Capacity for and commitment to engage in continuous learning
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office suite of applications; Advanced skill in Microsoft Excel and with online searching techniques
  • Experience working with library systems
  • Knowledge about the structure and practices of the publishing industry
  • Ability to effectively organize information, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment, as well as independently
  • Ability to engage enthusiastically and effectively with library colleagues and a diverse community of library users
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written

SALARY:  $73,000.00-$85,000.00
