General Summary: 

Reporting to the Director of Website Strategy & Development, the Website Designer & Content Specialist plays an integral role in planning, designing, and implementing content on UMass Boston’s official website and digital communications. This is a role for a quick learner, a people person, and someone who enjoys variety in their work. Website Designer & Content Specialist responsibilities include meeting with stakeholders across the university to determine what they need on their branch of the website, developing sitemaps for new and revised web content, designing the layout of new content using Terminalfour content types, choosing and optimizing website imagery, and light copywriting. Put simply, this individual will know how to make website content pop.
 
The Website Designer & Content Specialist benefits from the support and experience of an enthusiastic team, including the Director of Website Strategy & Development who supervises the entire website team, the Senior Lead UX & Web Designer, the Senior Web Designer, and the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Marketing & Engagement. Together with the other members of Website Services, a department within the Division of Marketing and Engagement, the Website Designer & Content Specialist works on initiatives to improve the quality, performance, and ADA compliance of umb.edu and related digital properties. This individual also assists in the training and ongoing professional education of website editors across the university. As a member of the Division of Marketing & Engagement, the incumbent will bring a collaborative spirit and creative ideas to continue improving the university’s digital presence and the division’s support of the university.

Examples of Duties: 

  • Meet and consult with stakeholders across the university to determine what they need on their branch of the website.
  • Collaborate closely with developers and senior designers to determine priorities and procedures related to the university website.
  • Assist with managing timelines for website updates and communicate regularly with web stakeholders on active projects.
  • Develop sitemaps for new or newly optimized web content using solutions like Octopus.io.
  • Design the layout of new or newly optimized web content using existing Terminalfour elements.
  • Select and optimize website imagery.
  • Light copywriting and collaboration with digital copywriters and editors throughout the division.
  • Update and and assist with managing university website to ensure content is accurate, consistent, accessible, aligned with university standards, and in support of institutional goals.
  • Assist in the overall testing and quality control of the website and web technology tools, and the formulation of campus policies and standards related to web design.
  • Assist in the training and continuing education of website editors across the university.
  • Exercise editorial skills and ADA compliance skills in converting various print documents into webpages.
  • Aid in creation of training materials and digital documentation for university content management system and web technology tools that support overall web strategy.
  • As a member of the Division of Marketing & Engagement, provide guidance to all areas of the university on matters relating to web design and front-end development.
  • Engage with university staff, faculty, and other technology groups within the university system to facilitate collaboration and ensure effective web design and front-end development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

A bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field (website design, communications, etc.)
  • Minimum of 3-5 years post-bachelor’s experience in a related field (website design, communications, etc.)
  • Proficient in Adobe Photoshop
  • Experience with Terminalfour or a related CMS preferred
  • Experience with HTML5, CSS3, PHP, JS preferred
  • Experience with WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards and guidelines preferred
  • Project management skills, with ability to translate ideas into working strategy, gather requirements and complete projects on time and on budget
  • Must have strong customer service and interpersonal skills, ability to coordinate and work with others to accomplish assigned tasks
  • Must work collaboratively with individuals and groups from a wide variety of backgrounds and organizational levels, to incorporate their ideas, adapt to their needs, and to form consensus in appropriate situations
  • Specific understanding of industry trends and standards required
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and projects and work in a challenging environment with competing priorities
