Job Summary:
The Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Equity (AASAE) unit within the University of Massachusetts Office of the President seeks a Data Analyst (Institutional Research) responsible for analyzing institutional and public data to support a culture of data-informed decision-making, with a focus on student access, success, and equity. This work will include data analysis and management; creating and analyzing student-related metrics, enrollment management trends, academic data, and other KPIs; creating data visualizations; documenting workflows and processes.
Essential Functions:
- Collecting and reviewing institutional metrics around admissions, enrollment, academic programs, student performance, sponsored research, faculty, and alumni.
- Conduct quantitative analyses to help inform strategic initiatives.
- Help develop tools and processes that improve operational efficiency.
- Maintaining comprehensive documentation of all projects so that studies and workflows are replicable.
- Collaborating within AASAE and with other President's Office departments to identify data needs.
- Responding to ad hoc requests for data from senior officers, university committees, and other academic and administrative offices in a manner that is accurate, expeditious, and clear.
- Assisting in developing and maintaining reports, presentations, and other deliverables.
- Building strong relationships and working collaboratively with stakeholders in the president’s office and the five UMass campuses.
- Communicating with supervisors and peers – providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, email, or in-person.
- Participating in appropriate training.
Other Functions:
- Support other projects and initiatives of the President's Office as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):
- Bachelor's degree in a quantitatively-oriented or research-related field such as statistics, mathematics, social science, behavioral science, and information science or equivalent experience.
- One to three years of work experience in research methods, quantitative analysis, descriptive and inferential statistics, interpretation of data and findings, documentation of processes, and familiarity with data collection and preparation.
- Experience with data visualization tools or analytics platforms such as Microsoft Power BI or Tableau.
- Strong MS Office skills, including intermediate to advanced Excel: utilizing formulas/functions to clean/transform data, create pivot tables, create visualizations.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to interact with individuals at all levels and to work as a team.
- Strong self-initiative and service orientation; must work well independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):
- Master's degree or graduate work in a research or quantitative field preferred.
- Experience in higher education or government/public sector setting.
- Experience with Tableau Desktop and/or Tableau Prep.
- Working knowledge of SQL.
- Working knowledge of relational databases, data mart, or data warehouses.
- Familiarity with DEI metrics, especially quantifying and assessing access and equity.
Working Conditions:
- Hybrid work environment. Primarily located at One Beacon Street offices, with regular remote work.
- Any offers within the President's Office are conditioned explicitly upon the potential candidate consenting to and completing a background review.
Additional Details:
Salary commensurate with experience up to $70,000.
