General Summary of Position:

The Associate Director of Business Development and Marketing (ADBD) will be responsible for helping to grow the research enterprise of the Center for Energy Innovation (CEI), fostering relationships with energy industry companies as well as state and federal agencies involved in energy funding, policy, and research. The ADBD will be responsible for developing marketing materials and prepare proposals for grants to acquire external funding to support the CEI as well as help to increase the enrollment of students in the Energy Engineering Program. The initial appointment will be for 2 years with the possibility of renewal based on productivity and performance and the availability of funding.

Essential Job Duties:

1. Funding and Growth:

  • Prepare proposals to obtain externally funded research grants from industry, state and federal agencies, foundations, and non-government organizations (NGOs) to support the growth of the CEI. The successful candidate will be expected to initiate and assist in the formulation and writing of externally funded research proposals. This effort will include finding appropriate opportunities, finding collaborative partners, generating preliminary data, idea generation, and proposal writing/submission.
  • Establish relationships and set up meetings with companies to discuss projects and partnering (and determine strategy for meetings and faculty who should be included).
  • Assist in preparing programmatic reports and making presentations to sponsors or funding agencies.

2. Marketing, Branding and Visibility:

  • Work with the Center for Energy Innovation (CEI) Director, faculty, staff, and students to assist with efforts related to research funding opportunities that will support the CEI growth.
  • Generate marketing materials and strategies in support of the CEI and Energy Engineering Program.
  • Help in organizing a CEI webinar series and the creation of a Center newsletter
  • Develop and maintain a presence on social media (Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) for the CEI. Assist in creating content that will be featured on the website.
  • Assist and organizing energy related student events and competitions.
  • Participate in energy related conferences as an attendee and support in marketing at appropriate events (e.g., networking and booths).
  • Help to organize events and tours of the UML campus to prospective energy-related groups (e.g., companies, government, non-profit, donors)
  • Create a podcast and YouTube videos related to energy issues important to raise awareness of the Center nationally

3. Strategy:

  • Develop and foster strategic collaborations and partnerships with other universities and companies in support of the CEI.
  • Have and understanding of Center members capabilities and work closely with other staff and faculty in support of the Rist Institute’s and CEI’s mission.

4. Attend Meetings:

  • Conduct regular meetings with the Center Director, faculty, staff, and other group members (e.g., other Post-docs, graduate students, undergraduate students).
  • Disseminate information by attending relevant technical meetings and conferences nationally and internationally when appropriate or required.

Other Job Duties:

  • Promote the University’s commitment to customer service.
  • Help with the general operation Center for Energy Innovation when needed.
  • Help to perform other new related duties as assigned or as needed.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree with relevant education and interests in renewable energy and sustainability or research center operation

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience (e.g., business development, marketing, communication, and grant writing) and a proven track record of accomplishments working in a company, research center, or institute.

Skills:

  • Ability to work as a team player within diverse groups
  • Outstanding writing and communication skills (e.g., E-mail, verbal, written, oral presentations, highly responsive)
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Experience in working with computer programs and software
  • Proficiency with operation of computers, the internet, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong analytical skills, creativity, and attention to detail in efficiently planning and executing initiatives and organizing events
  • An understanding and familiarity of social media and marketing
  • Ability to work independently, with limited direction, as well as within a team environment with diverse groups including faculty, staff, students, external partners and stakeholders
  • Ability to quickly and easily learn standard university software for administration, accounting, and operations
  • Ability to travel locally, nationally, or internationally to promote Center activities
  • Ability to adapt in a face-paced work atmosphere with constant changes

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The preferred candidate will also have a knowledge of the energy landscape (nationally and internationally) in industry and government.
  • Experience in preparing proposals in support of externally funded grants
  • Experience in graphic design and the development of marketing materials
  • Ability to work with, mentor, and inspire students
  • Desire to work in creating a cooperative atmosphere
  • Interest in learning new technologies and explore ways to promote advancement in energy technologies
  • Experience in the development of podcasts and YouTube videos
  • Experience in soliciting donations for organizations

This is a Grants & Contracts (MTA/GRACE) Union position, Grade P20.
