General Summary:
The Assistant Community Director for New Student Transition plays an important role in creating an environment and experience that contributes to the academic and personal success of incoming and residential students. The Assistant Community Director for New Student Transition direct supervision from the Assistant Director of Residential Life and Director of New Student and Family Programs.
The incumbent will work 18.75 hours per week (often outside of traditional business hours) to assist in the implementation of a residential program focused on individual contact and a culture of care. Additionally, the Assistant Community Director for New Student Transition supports the transition of first-year students and their families/supporters to UMass Boston. The Assistant Community Director for New Student Transition must possess the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with a diverse population of students, staff and faculty
Examples of Duties:
Office of Housing and Residential Life
- Responds on call for crisis situations, including during non-business and weekend hours
- Responds to students and families on Residential Life issues or concerns;
- Acts as a liaison with University of Massachusetts Boston Police Department, University Counseling Services, faculty, and other University offices;
- Assists in the ongoing development, revision, and implementation of crisis management and communications plans as necessary;
- Attends and participates in weekly professional staff meetings as scheduled and meets regularly with supervisors;
- Assists in University/Office events such as residence hall opening and closing, Open Houses, and Welcome Days as needed;
- Responds to written and oral communications in a timely manner;
- Assists in the opening and closing of the residence hall; manage, distribute and control the keys for the residence hall, including after-hours lockouts;
- Attends and supports ongoing Resident Assistant training;
- Lives among students and sets an appropriate standard for residential living;
- Provides counseling and referral for personal, developmental, judicial, and academic concerns of students;
- Empowers residents to take responsibility for their actions and decisions as a member of the UMass Boston and residence hall community;
- Informs and educate residents about institutional and Housing and Residential Life policies;
- Assists with the Health and Safety Inspection process for the residence halls;
- Provides administrative support for case management functions;
- Assists with evening and weekend programming as needed.
Office of New Student and Family Programs
- Assist with Family Weekend events that foster connection between families/supporters and the university community.
- Facilitate virtual Family Workshops aimed at empowering families/supporters to be effective partners in their student’s success.
- Support the implementation of programming for first-generation college students including First-Gen Week and the Tri-Alpha Induction/Graduation Ceremony.
- Support the Assistant Director of New Student & Family Programs with orientation programming including Undergraduate New Student Orientation, Graduate New Student Orientation, International Welcome, and Family Orientation.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling or a closely related field, is required. Minimum of 1 year full-time work experience an higher education is required. Work experience in housing and/or new student programs or related field is strongly preferred. A demonstrated record of success in student services is preferred. This position requires evening, weekend and holiday hours, as well as availability outside of regularly scheduled hours for emergencies. Availability to serve in the on-call rotation for Housing and Residential Life staff is required. Availability to serve as an emergency responder and perform assigned tasks, as deemed necessary by the Associate Dean/Director.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and other administrative software;
- Knowledge of the safety and security precautions within residence housing;
- Knowledge and understanding of student confidentiality;
- General knowledge of and ability to apply counseling techniques as appropriate;
- Ability to analyze problems and determine appropriate solutions within a framework of general policies and procedures;
- Physical and emotional ability to work long and irregular hours, occasionally involving emotional stress and interrupted sleep;
- Strong oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to work independently;
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills;
- Strong commitment to customer and student service.

This is an exempt union position. This is a part-time, temporary position with a current end date of June 30, 2027, subject to renewal contingent on funding and university needs.
