| The Department of Art at the University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks applicants for a full-time academic-year (nine-month) non-tenure Lecturer position in Animation & Visual Narrative. The department values diversity as a factor in academic and artistic excellence.
The successful candidate will be an experienced visual narrative artist and educator with a passion for storytelling, character design, and world-building across multiple genres, pipelines, and platforms. They will be able to teach Introduction to 2D Animation and Professional Practices for Animators, as well as courses in storyboarding, character design, and other areas of visual development. Additional expertise in illustration, comic arts, or transmedia storytelling is highly encouraged.
The candidate will demonstrate an innovative approach to narrative, with the ability to apply skills and concepts in interdisciplinary contexts. They will stay current with trends and practices in the areas of animation and visual narrative, and work to develop foundational and advanced courses in visual narrative arts. They will also mentor students in preparing for careers in the animation and narrative industries, including developing strong portfolios, reels, and other professional materials aligned with industry standards. Experience working in collaborative studio environments is highly desirable.
The person in this position will teach three undergraduate courses per semester and participate in service to the department for the academic year. Other teaching responsibilities include serving on BFA and MFA thesis committees, student advising, and helping to oversee animation facilities and equipment. The successful candidate will:
● Have the ability to lead and develop a first-year experience aligned with contemporary art and design theories and practices
● Be able to teach 2D, 3D, 4D (timebased) media, and introductory-level drawing courses
● Have strong organizational skills to coordinate between faculty and Graduate Teaching Assistants and Graduate Instructors teaching in Foundations.
● Coordinate with faculty to assure that first year students have the skills necessary to continue in upper level courses
● Demonstrate the ability to develop a comprehensive curriculum for a diverse group of learners
● Exhibit mentorship skills to guide Graduate Teaching Assistants and Graduate Instructors teaching in Foundations
Responsibilities include:
● Directing Foundations Program, overseeing area budgeting, scheduling and coordinating Foundation classrooms and studio spaces
● Teaching five courses a year. Current program includes: Art 110 Basic Studio Drawing, ART 120 Drawing Composition, Art 131 Foundation I, Art 142 Foundation II, and ART 153 Foundation III
● Supervising Graduate Teaching Assistants and Graduate Instructors teaching Foundations classes
● Building community among incoming undergraduate students, graduate teaching assistants and faculty through curricular and extra curricular events
● Leading and participating in Art Department and College of Humanities and Fine Arts student recruitment activities
● Serve on college and department committees as needed |

Initial teaching responsibilities per academic year will include a minimum of two studios plus two structural design courses. Significant service is also expected, including career preparation-related events and recruitment outreach, in addition to participation in department- and university-level committees and service to the profession. |
